Composite samples are typically collected for soil stockpile or surface area characterization. Twenty-four-hour composite samples of water may be collected with automated composite samplers from streams or process piping composite samples may be made of several grab samples collected from different depths in a soil boring.

In Japan, several commercial projects have been reported in the literature. For example, at the National Research Institute for Metals, the NiTi shape-memory alloy is produced by combustion synthesis from elemental powder for use as wires, tubes, and sheets. The mechanical properties and the shape-memory effect of the wires are similar to those produced conventionally (Kaieda et ai, 1990b). Also, the production of metal-ceramic composite pipes from the centrifugal-thermite process has been reported (Odawara, 1990 see also Section III,C,1).

Alloy steel pipe composition has various elements, with total concentration between 1.0% and 50% by weight, which enhances the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. These steels can be grouped under low-alloy steels. Along with economic growth, the demand of alloy steel pipes and tubes for industrial use has increased enormously. The most common alloying elements are nickel, chromium, silicon, vanadium, and molybdeniun. Special pipe steels also contain very small amounts of aluminum, cobalt, tungsten, titanium, and zirconium. Alloy steel has different properties on the basis of its composition. Alloy steel tubes cater to domestic and industrial requirements, such as gas drilling, offshore projects, refineries, and petrochemical plants.

The use of logarithmic extrapolation methods offers an excellent method of predicting the long term service length of composite pipe. This is similar to the extrapolation shown in the underground fuel tanks testing. 

A test room of 3 m x 5 m with an internal height of 2.8 m was furnished with vertical PVC, polyethylene, and glass fibre-reinforced polyester pipes of 25 to 90 mm dia., empty or water-filled. Some of them were covered with black-plaster wall. In a second experiment, pipes were mounted horizontally on the walls or under the ceiling. Exhaust conduits of 150 mm dia. were also incorporated, either of glass-fibre-reinforced polyester or PVC/glass-fibre-reinforced polyester composite. Pipes on the wall and the exhaust conduits were loaded with water and air streams, respectively, while the pipes under the ceiling were empty. 

Cold-setting reactions of these kinds are embodied in numerous patented dental cements (Section 12.14), electrical cements, refractory mortars, moulding compositions, pipe-jointing materials and miscellaneous industrial cements. 

UPE resins can be used as clear castings or in combination with particulate fillers or fibres. The resin was developed to meet the demand of lightweight materials in military application. The first functional use of UPE was in radome. Because of the obvious advantages of easy processability and low cost, it was used in a wide range of applications in civil sectors such as tanks, pipes, and electronic gears. Some of the important products based on cast UPE resins are encapsulation of electronic assembly, buttons, door handles, knives, umbrellas, industrial wood and furniture finishing. A filled resin system using limestone, silica, and china clay are used for floor tiles. The major use of UPE is as a matrix for fibre-reinforced composites. Such composites have wide applications in automobile and construction industries such as boats, water-skis and television antennae. Examples of applications of UPE resins are presented in Table 2.7.
