The book is similar to the two compendia already described. It is pubHshed approximately every five years and supplements are pubHshed between editions. In addition, notices of changes that need to be pubHcized after adoption at meetings of the committee are pubHshed promptly in the ACS journals Analytical Chemistry or, for those of a more urgent nature. Part—I has three chapters that exclusively deal with General Aspects of pharmaceutical analysis. Chapter 1 focuses on the pharmaceutical chemicals and their respective purity and management. Critical information with regard to description of the finished product, sampling procedures, bioavailability, identification tests, physical constants and miscellaneous characteristics, such as ash values, loss on drying, clarity and color of solution, specific tests, limit tests of metallic and non-metallic impurities, limits of moisture content, volatile and non-volatile matter and lastly residue on ignition have also been dealt with. It also includes biomedical analytical chemistry, colorimetric assays, theory and assay of biochemicals, such as urea, bilirubin, cholesterol and enzymatic assays, such as alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, salient features of radioimmunoassay and automated methods of chemical analysis. Since chemistry is largely concerned with trends and differences, compendia of spectra are essential working tools for the chemist. The original literature, which consists of the papers published in the many journals that deal with organic chemistry, is in itself relatively inaccessible, because it is almost impossible to go through the indexes of a large number of journals for a reasonable number of years. There are available compendia that present an enormous amount of information on experimental methods for studying the kinetics of chemical reactions. One such source is Bemasconi, Editor (1986), Investigations of Rates and Mechanisms of Reactions, which contains two parts of the series Techniques of Chemistry (Weissberger. Series Editor) that presents discussions on all phases of kinetics theory and techniques. Part I, General Considerations and Reactions at Conventional Rates, would be especially valuable for a study of kinetic methods. Part II, Investigation of Elementary Reaction Steps in Solution and Fast Reaction Techniques, deals with additional aspects of solution kinetics. An extensive compendium of software for computational chemistry appeared in Volume 7 of Reviews in Computational Chemistry. That compendium also had information about the Internet and the World Wide Web. We forego an appendix in this volume to allow more room for chapters. When available, standard methods of sampling and analysis should be used. The International Standard Organisation (ISO), the Comite Europeen de Normalisation (CEN) and various national bodies have published several methods for determination of airborne contaminants. Primary sources are the compendia of methods recommended by the regulatory bodies, i.e. the UK, HSE the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The HSE has published Methods for the Determination of Hazardous Substances (MDHS) for over 70 specific substances (Health and Safety Executive 1981-95). OSHA and NIOSH have published manuals with more than 500 and 100 sampling and analytical methods respectively (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 1994 Occupational Safety and Health Administration 1985). Secondary sources are published literature references in, for example. Annals of Occupational Hygiene, the American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal, Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, or Analytical Chemistry. [Pg.88]

Some fifty years ago a student graduating with a good quality degree in chemistry could be expected to have a reasonable grasp of most areas, including a fair number of recent developments. Since then, the explosion of knowledge has made any such expectation quite unrealistic. Teachers of the subject continue, however, to need texts to which they can refer students. In this chapter, the retrosynthetic analysis and proposals for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds with one to three heteroatoms in five- or six-membered heterocyclic rings are presented. Such heterocyclic rings are constituents of thousands of biologically active compounds.
