Additional Aspects

A part of pattern recognition deals with the recognition and analysi s of clusters in the d-di ensionaI pattern space. Various methods are available to find all points belonging to the same cluster (Chapter 7). JHs lay jiejUTO trie to project or map the d-dimensional space onto 2 or 3 dimensions (Chapter 8 . The human interpreter with his enormous pattern recognition capability may separate clusters on the projection sometimes better than a computer program. 

If the class membership of the patterns are known one speaks about supervised learning (learning with a teacheh) More difficult is the problem if no natural classes of patterns are known a priori. In this case an unsupervised learning (learning without a teacher) requires a cluster analysis and a physically meaningful interpretation of the clus- ters. 

Most pattern recognition methods are nonparametric. That means it is not necessary to know the underlying statistic (e.g. the probability for a class at a certain point or region of the pattern space). 

Parametric methods (Chapter 5) assume a knowledge of the class-conditional probabilities (which are very hard to estimate in practical problems).

Several polymerization techniques are in widespread usage. Both of the above approaches rely in most cases on classical ideas that picture the atoms and molecules in the system interacting via ordinary electrical and steric forces. These interactions between the species are expressed in terms of force fields, i.e., sets of mathematical equations that describe the attractions and repulsions between the atomic charges, the forces needed to stretch or compress the chemical bonds, repulsions between the atoms due to then-excluded volumes, etc. A variety of different force fields have been developed by different workers to represent the forces present in chemical systems, and although these differ in their details, they generally tend to include the same aspects of the molecular interactions. Some are directed more specifically at the forces important for, say, protein structure, while others focus more on features important in liquids. With time more and more sophisticated force fields are continually being introduced to include additional aspects of the interatomic interactions, e.g., polarizations of the atomic charge clouds and more subtle effects associated with quantum chemical effects. Naturally, inclusion of these additional features requires greater computational effort, so that a compromise between sophistication and practicality is required. 

Instead of a conjunction of preconditions, as used by the STRIPS and conditional operators, the functional operator has a set of conjunctions of preconditions (Fig. 2c). Each element in the set describes some possible situation that might exist before the operator is applied. For each element of the set of preconditions, there is a corresponding element in the set of postconditions. The functional operator is a more flexible model than the STRIPS or conditional operators. It comes closer to the modeling needs for the synthesis of operating procedures for chemical processes, but as we will see in the next section, we need to introduce additional aspects in order to capture the network-like structure of chemical processes. 

Passing reference has been made to some of these experiments, and some of their results briefly presented, in preceding sections. What follows here is a personal selection of case studies presented in greater detail. These are chosen to highlight various additional aspects of current investigation of the PECD phenomenon.

When rationalizing the significant difference of the hydrocarbon- and ether-bridged radical anions, the main aspect will certainly be the conformation of the oxyethylene chain, which brings the electrophores into closer contact. The counterparts of dissolving particles are the processes of precipitation and crystallization the description and simulation of which involve several additional aspects however. First of all, the interest in commercial operations often relates to the average particle size and the particle size distribution at the completion of the (batch) operation. In precipitation reactors, particle sizes strongly depend on the (variations in the) local concentrations of the reactants, this dependence being quite complicated because of the nonlinear interactions of fluctuations in velocities, reactant concentrations, and temperature.
