For relatively simple mechanisms, aU the diagrammatic and systematic procedures are quite convenient. The King-Altman method is best suited for single-loop mechanisms, but becomes laborious for more complex cases with five or more enzyme forms because of the work involved in the calculation and drawing of valid patterns. Although there are several efficient methods for deriving steady-state rate equations, one has to be proficient at only one of them since, for a given reaction scheme, tihey all lead to the same equation. 

Recently, however, Fromm has described a computer-assisted procedures for deriving steady-state rate equations using only commercial, and widely available mathematical programs (Fromm Fromm, 1999) in this way, one can derive even complex rate equations without a special programming expertise. Thus, with the advent of computer technology, the derivation of kinetic equations has passed away from manual algebraic manipulations to more rapid and much more reliable computers.

The comparison of different methods is sometimes reported in terms of number of iterations (Gl). The danger of such a comparison lies in the fact that the computation per iteration may be vastly different for different iterative methods. Results presented in this manner should always be carefully qualified.

There have been very few comparisons of different methods for determination of nitrification rates. Enoksson (1986) compared three isotopic methods, incorporation with N-serve to inhibit nitrification, and N03 isotope dilution.
