Operator closing

Reactor conversion. In Chap. 2 an initial choice was made of reactor type, operating conditions, and conversion. Only in extreme cases would the reactor be operated close to complete conversion. The initial setting for the conversion varies according to whether there are single reactions or multiple reactions producing byproducts and whether reactions are reversible. [Pg.95]

A viable electrocatalyst operating with minimal polarization for the direct electrochemical oxidation of methanol at low temperature would strongly enhance the competitive position of fuel ceU systems for transportation appHcations. Fuel ceUs that directiy oxidize CH OH would eliminate the need for an external reformer in fuel ceU systems resulting in a less complex, more lightweight system occupying less volume and having lower cost. Improvement in the performance of PFFCs for transportation appHcations, which operate close to ambient temperatures and utilize steam-reformed CH OH, would be a more CO-tolerant anode electrocatalyst. Such an electrocatalyst would reduce the need to pretreat the steam-reformed CH OH to lower the CO content in the anode fuel gas. Platinum—mthenium alloys show encouraging performance for the direct oxidation of methanol. [Pg.586]

Operating close to the surge limit in steady-state with small values of bj requires a fast control loop. This allows the valve to open rapidly to prevent surge when necessary. [Pg.394]

The most important consideration concerning temperature is to avoid operating close to a temperature, which will allow flashing of the liquid. Mechanical seals work well on many liquids they work poorly on most gases. [Pg.508]

The bipolar power transistor is a current driven device. To guarantee a switchlike operation, it must operate close or within its saturated state. For this to occur, the on base current must satisfy (also refer to Figure 3-29). [Pg.63]

Operation close to set pressures, e.g., due to pressure flucmations or pulsations. However, the normal 10% or 100 to 170 kPa between operating and set pressure should still be applied in designs. [Pg.171]

The pump feeding an oil stream to the tubes of a furnace failed. The operator closed the oil valve and intended to open a steam valve to purge the furnace tubes. He opened the wrong valve, there was no flow to the furnace, and the tubes were overheated and collapsed. [Pg.81]

One day the operator closed the remotely operated valve in the air line but did not consider it necessary to close the hand valve as well, although the instructions said he should. The remotely operated valve was leaking, the air met the reactor contents in the feed line, and reaction took place there. The heat developed caused the line to fail, and a major fire followed. [Pg.313]

A tube has failed in one of the four condensers about once every three years. If a condenser tube fails, the affected condenser can be removed from service by closing four isolation valves (propane vapor inlet valve), liquid propane outlet valve, cooling water supply valve, and cooling water return valve). However, if a tube fails, it is essential that the operator close the two propane isolation valves before closing the two water isolation valves. Closing the two water valves first would allow pressure to build on the tube side of the condenser and rupture the tube head. [Pg.231]

The advantage of the LIM is the reduced cost of the guideway and the ability to operate closely spaced vehicles without the block limitation of the LSM. [Pg.738]

When a wire rope is operated close to the minimum design factor, the rope and related equipment should be in good operating condition. At all times, the operating personnel should minimize shock, impact, and acceleration or deceleration of loads. Successful field operations indicate that the following design factors should be regarded as minimum ... [Pg.584]

OS 68] [R 19] [P 50] A numbering-up of five mini mixers, tested at the pilot stage, was used [134]. Automation of the entire process was required liquid-flow splitting to the single reactors was ... by no means trivial... [134]. The capacity of one mini reactor was 30 ml s , i.e. 1081 h . The complete setup hence should be operated close to 5001 h . The micro-reactor plant was operated at intervals as the preceding step was carried out batchwise. The operation of the micro-reactor plant started in August 1998 after a period of only about 1.5 years for development. [Pg.520]

In soil, the chances that any enzyme will retain its activity are very slim indeed, because inactivation can occur by denaturation, microbial degradation, and sorption (61,62), although it is possible that sorption may protect an enzyme from microbial degradation or chemical hydrolysis and retain its activity. The nature of most enzymes, particularly size and charge characteristics, is such that they would have very low mobility in soils, so that if a secreted enzyme is to have any effect, it must operate close to the point of secretion and its substrate must be able to diffuse to the enzyme. Secretory acid phosphatase was found to be produced in response to P-deficiency stress by epidermal cells of the main tap roots of white lupin and in the cell walls and intercellular spaces of lateral roots (63). Such apoplastic phosphatase is safe from soil but can be effective only when presented with soluble organophosphates, which are often present in the soil. solution (64). However, because the phosphatase activity in the rhizo-sphere originates from a number of sources (65), mostly microbial, and is much higher in the rhizosphere than in bulk soil (66), it seems curious that plants would have a need to secrete phosphatase at all. [Pg.30]

Calibration of the apparatus is necessary usually water and air or nitrogen are the reference materials. Vibrating tube densimeters designed to operate close to atmospheric pressure can achieve repeatability of parts in 10s. If the reciprocal of the frequency is linear in density, accuracies of 1 part in 105 are readily achievable. [Pg.9]

Reaction rates may often be improved by the use of more extreme operating conditions. More extreme conditions may reduce inventory appreciably. However, more extreme conditions bring their own problems, as will be discussed later. A very small reactor operating at a high temperature and pressure may be inherently safer than one operating at less extreme conditions because it contains a much lower inventory. A large reactor operating close to atmospheric temperature and pressure may be safe for different reasons. [Pg.628]

IC, and the software tool may not have warned you. You should also observe that such software tools often do not consider important external component tolerances. For example, your inductor itself may have a +20% tolerance on its inductance. But 20% lower inductance could mean up to 25% higher peak currents (if you are operating close to the CCM-DCM boundary, though with an r of 0.4, the increase in the peak would only be 0.2 x 0.25, i.e., 5%). Note that 1/0.8 = 1.25, so if L falls 20%, the AC current increases 25%. [Pg.278]
