Codes, ethics university

What have we learned so far The first issue has to do with the scope that the modification of standards would imply. The double standard as a criterion is broader than the scope that appeared to guide the initial reflections. It began by targeting AIDS but quickly pervaded all research. It has affected not only standards of treatment, but also the placebo debate. If it had been introduced into ethical codes like the Declaration of Helsinki, it would have implied a "universal policy" regulating all research.

The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) code is intended to provide minimum standards and universal principles for ethical marketing conduct on which national codes can be based. It is used as an operational code only in those countries (e.g. less developed countries) where no other code exists. In practice the self-regulatory national codes in developed countries are usually stricter and more detailed than the IFPMA code. 

This Statement of Ethical Principles sets a standard to which members of the engineering profession should aspire in their working habits and relationships. The Statement is fully compatible with the principles in the UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser s Universal Ethical Code for Scientists, with an emphasis on matters of particular relevance to engineers. The values on which it is based should apply in every situation in which professional engineers exercise their judgement. 

University codes may be very succinct. For example, the U.S. Military Academy s Cadet Honor Code is simply stated as A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do. According to the USM A, On a behavioral level, the Code represents a simple standard for all cadets. On a developmental plane. West Point expects that all cadets will strive to live far above the minimum standard of behavior and develop a commitment to ethical principles guiding moral actions. Besides it succinctness, the USMA s honor code is closely linked to the academy s core mission which is to develop leaders of character for our Army... A leader of character will apply the Spirit of the Code when making decisions involving ethical dilemmas. ...
