Commercial casein is usually manufactured from skim milk by precipitating the casein through acidification or rennet coagulation. Casein exists in milk as a calcium caseinate-calcium phosphate complex. When acid is added, the complex is dissociated, and at pH 4.6, the isoelectric point of casein, maximum precipitation occurs. Relatively little commercial casein is produced in the United States, but imports amounted to well over 150 million lb in 1981 (USDA 1981C). Casein is widely used in food products as a protein supplement. Industrial uses include paper coatings, glues, plastics and artificial fibers. Casein is typed according to the process used to precipitate it from milk, such as hydrochloric acid casein, sulfuric acid casein, lactic acid casein, coprecipitated casein, rennet casein, and low-viscosity casein. Lay-up proceeds by laying down the veneer which is to be the back surface of the panel. Then a sufficient number of pieces of core veneer are passed through the glue spreader to form the next layer of cross-oriented veneer. The glue spreader commonly used in hardwood plywood manufacture is a roU coater in which a pair of opposing mbber roUs are coated with a thin layer of adhesive. As the veneer is passed between the roUs, the adhesive is transferred to the surfaces of the veneer. Adhesive is appHed only to the cross-pfles and in sufficient quantity to provide a continuous layer on both opposing faces of veneer. Thus, in the case of a three-ply panel, only the core layer is spread with adhesive and in that of a five-ply panel, the second and fourth layers both of which are cross-pfles, are spread with adhesive. Fluoridation of potable water suppHes for the prevention of dental caries is one of the principal uses for sodium fluoride (see Water, municipal WATER treatment). Use rate for this appHcation is on the order of 0.7 to 1.0 mg/L of water as fluoride or 1.5 to 2.2 mg/L as NaF (2). NaF is also appHed topically to teeth as a 2% solution (see Dentifrices). Other uses are as a flux for deoxidiziag (degassiag) rimmed steel (qv), and ia the resmelting of aluminum. A majority of the fasteners used in automobiles in the United States are coated with microcapsules loaded with an adhesive. When the fastener is installed, a fraction of the capsules in the coating mpture releasing the adhesive payload. The adhesive essentially glues the fasteners in place preventing them from becoming loose and causing rattles. The capsules are designed so that only a fraction of them break each time a fastener is taken off and put back. The on/off cycle can be repeated three or four times. [Pg.325]

In the late 1800s, when the demand for coated paper for the halftone printing process increased, casein rapidly replaced glue. Casein forms a hard, tough film when dry, and can be waterproofed easily with formaldehyde (qv). The properties of soy protein are similar to those of casein, and soy protein has been substituted for it in many types of coated papers requiring a casein-type binder (see Soybeans and other oilseeds).
