By employing additives to improve interfacial adhesion and the cohesive strength of the mbber phase, natural mbber can compete with ethylene—propylene mbbers as an impact modifier for polypropylene. These hard grades, containing between 15 and 25% natural mbber, have the potential for use in the automotive and domestic markets, eg, in bumpers, spoilers, grilles, electrical connectors, and floor tiles. 

Uses. Coumarone-indene resins have outlets in paints, as tackifiers in mbber compounding, and as adhesives in the manufacturing of flooring tiles (see Hydrocarbon resins). 

Plastic Flooring. Plastic flooring is marketed either as tile or sheet flooring. Tile is suppHed as pieces usually 30.5 x 30.5 cm with a thickness of 0.16—0.32 cm and is usually homogeneous ia compositioa. Sheet flooring, oa the other hand, is produced ia roU form 1.8, 2.7, 3.7 and 4.6 m wide (2- and 4-m ia Europe), and generally consists of a plastic upper component on a fibrous backiag. 

The fact that the polymer contains no halogens along with certain unique compounding techniques for flame resistance prompts the selection of ethylene—acryflc as jacketing material on certain transportation/mifltary electrical cables and in floor tiles. 

Soon after World War II the hard thermoplastic floor tile was developed. These tiles use coumarone resins as a binder for the other ingredients, which may contain fibrous fillers such as asbestos, inert fillers such as china clay and softeners such as paraffin wax. 

Polychloroprene latices are mainly used for high-pressure lamination, for foam bonding and for vinyl adhesion [82]. Also they are used for foil lamination, carpet installation, and PVC floor tile bonding. 

China clay or kmlin, which is predominantly kaolinite, is particularly valuable because it is essentially free from iron impurities (and therefore colourless). World production in 1991 was 24.7M1 (USA 39%, UK 13%, Colombia, Korea and USSR 7% each). In the USA over half of this vast tonnage is used for paper filling or paper coating and only 130000 tonnes was used for china, crockery, and earthenware, which is now usually made from ball clay, a particularly fine-grained, highly plastic material which is predominantly kaolinite together with clay-mica and quartz. Some 800000 tonnes of ball clay is used annually in the USA for white ware, table ware, wall and floor tiles, sanitary ware, and electrical porcelain.
