Water chloride

Hydrogen Chloride—Water System. Hydrogen chloride is highly soluble in water and this aqueous solution does not obey Henry s law at ah concentrations. Solubhity data are summarized in Table 5. The relationship between the pressure and vapor composition of unsaturated aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions is given in Reference 12. The vapor—Hquid equiHbria for the water—hydrogen chloride system at pressures up to 1632 kPa and at temperatures ranging from —10 to +70° C are documented in Reference 13.

During one run, 48 g. of product precipitated from the tetrahydrofuran reaction mixture. This precipitate was filtered, washed with saturated, aqueous sodium chloride, water, and petroleum ether (b.p. 35-60°) to yield a crystalline product, m.p. 99-106°. For recovery of the remaining product, the tetrahydrofuran filtrate was worked up in accordance with the described procedure. 

Design a partial condenser to cool a mixture of hydrogen chloride-water vapor from 178°F to 90°F using 60 gal per min of chilled water at 70°F The unit is to have the acid mixture in the tubes, because this will allow for a cheaper construction than if this material were in the shell. The tube-side material is to be impervious graphite, and the shell and shell-side baffles are to be steel. The acid vapor is essentially at its dew point.

It is very common for inorganic chemists to neglect or ignore the presence of solvent molecules coordinated to a metal centre. In some cases, this is just carelessness, or laziness, as in the description of an aqueous solution of cobalt(ii) nitrate as containing Co ions. Except in very concentrated solutions, the actual solution species is [Co(H20)6] . In other cases, it is not always certain exactly what ligands remain coordinated to the metal ion in solution, or how many solvent molecules become coordinated. Solutions of iron(iii) chloride in water contain a mixture of complex ions containing a variety of chloride, water, hydroxide and oxide ligands.
