Although standard lines of water-activated batteries were once manufactured, most batteries now are designed and manufactured for specific applications. Tables 17.8 and 17.9 list some of the standard and special purpose magnesium/cuprous chloride and magnesium/ silver chloride batteries that were manufactured. Of these, only the two batteries illustrated in Fig. 17.28 are currently manufactured. 

McMurdo Instruments Ltd supply a range of magnesium-silver chloride cells (Aquacells). which are activated by seawater and have obvious applications in marine and aircraft safety lights, buoys and flashing beacons. These batteries have a long storage life provided they are kept in a sealed condition. Once unsealed and immersed in water they must be considered expended. They cannot be recharged. 

In previous sections of this chapter, magnesium anodes have been considered as replacements for zinc in Leclanche and air-depolarized cells. In sea water-activated reserve batteries, magnesium anodes are coupled with either silver chloride, lead chloride, manganese dioxide or, occasionally,...
