Cellulose carboxymethylation

Avicel rnicrocrystaUine cellulose carboxymethyl cellulose FMC Corp. [Pg.440]

Some part of the cellulose fraction is redirected to make cellulose derivatives, such as cellulose acetate, methyl and ethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and hydroxypropyl cellulose. These derivatives find multiple applications, for instance, as additives in current products (e.g., paints, lacquers) of chemical industry. Typically, the preparation of cellulose derivatives takes place as a two-phase reaction cellulose is pretreated, for example, with alkali, and a reagent is added to get the substitution. Usually no catalyst is needed [5]. [Pg.165]

By the action of relatively small quantities of sodium chloroacetate on alkali cellulose, carboxymethyl ethers are obtained which give smooth solution in dilute alkali but which can be regenerated to give threads or films of high tensile strength. These products are relatively hygroscopic. The substances are soluble in the form of their sodium salts and form insoluble salts with many metals.8... [Pg.311]

Research on nasal powder drug delivery has employed polymers such as starch, dextrans, polyacrylic acid derivatives (e.g., carbopol, polycarbophil), cellulose derivatives (microcrystalline cellulose, semicrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose), chitosan, sodium alginate, hyaluronans, and polyanhydrides such as poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) (PVM/MA). Many of these polymers have already been used as excipients in pharmaceutical formulations and are often referred to as first-generation bioadhesives [38-45], In nasal dry powder a single bioadhesive polymer or a... [Pg.655]

The AC may react with methyl chloride or alpha-chloroacetic acid via a direct displacement reaction (eq. 2). The derivatives would be methji cellulose < carboxymethyl cellulose. [Pg.314]

The classification of polymers previously described has been used in this book for the discussion of pyrolysis results. An important class of polymers that is not discussed here is that of chemically modified natural polymers (or semisynthetic polymers). Examples of such polymers are the modified celluloses (carboxymethyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, etc ), modified starches, casein plastics (Galalith), etc. These types of compounds were discussed in the book on pyrolysis of natural organic polymers [2]. [Pg.20]

As far as biopolymers other than plain cellulose are concerned, grafting has been reported for crosslinked cellulose, oxidized cellulose, carboxymethylated cellulose, cellulose acetate and even for crosslinked derivatives. The grafted material content is usually given as the ratio of the increase in weight to the initial cellulose weight. [Pg.211]
