This publication focuses on essential management practices related to chemical reactivity hazards. Addresses safety assessment of reactions during both normal operations and excursions, as well as selection and extent of measures to be adopted. An English translation of this document is provided on the CD-ROM included with this publication.

This chapter provides a brief overview of investigation tools in simple, generic terms and demonstrates the benefits of using a more structured approach. There are a number of public and proprietary methodologies that employ generic tools, and some are referenced in the appendices and accompanying CD-ROM. 

Varieties of public and proprietary predefined trees are available for use, although most owe some allegiance to MORT. The comprehensiveness of the different trees varies from some that may not fully reach root causes, to others that are very detailed with numerous categories and sub-categories. Several of these trees are listed in the appendix and examples of TapRooT SOURCE /Root Cause Map and Comprehensive List of Causes (CLC) < 4) are included on the CD-ROM. 

A variety of public and proprietary checklists are available that vary in comprehensiveness. There is no reason for an organization to start from scratch in developing a checklist. A human factors checklist and tables are included in Chapter 6. The Systematic Cause Analysis Technique (SCAT)< > is an example of a proprietary checklist. The accompanying CD-ROM also contains examples of checklists which can be modified for the readers use. 

Results comparable to those shown in Figure 1 can readily be achieved with most crude mixtures containing synthetic or naturally occurring peptides, using similar RPC strategies. The resolution of synthetic peptides prepared by solid- or solution-phase chemical methods is now so routine by analytical and preparative RPC methods that an April 2000 CD-ROM database search of relevant scientific journals revealed that over 2500 publications arise each year on the use of RPC for the purification or analysis of peptides as part of the scientific literature related to peptide chemistry and its application in various fields of the biomedical or biological science and in biotechnological applications related to the food, environmental, and pharmaceutical industries.

This two-volume handbook is derived from another John Wiley Sons publication, Current Protocol in Food Analytical Chemistry. That manual was published from January 2001 -December 2003 in loose-leaf and CD-Rom format. That design permitted addition of new and revised units on a quarterly basis. The two-year compilation of these units makes for a very complete reference on food analytical methods.
