Also in Germany, Mercedes-Benz has been developing electric vehicles for over 30 years. Many of the later vehicles utilized advanced sodium—nickel chloride (ZEBRA) batteries. By 1997, over 1 million km of road testing of these batteries had been accumulated, much of it in the electric version of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class car. In 1994, the company commenced its research on fuel cell vehicles - the New Electric Car (NECAR) programme. Following the evaluation of a series of prototypes, the NECAR 5 was launched in November 2000. This, too, was based on the A-Class car. Power was supplied by a 75 kW fuel-cell system that was fed by an on-board methanol reformer. The car featured a cold-start facility to remove the need for the reformer to [Pg.258]

In 1996, consumption in the western world was 14.2 tonnes of rhodium and 3.8 tonnes of iridium. Unquestionably the main uses of rhodium (over 90%) are now catalytic, e.g. for the control of exhaust emissions in the car (automobile) industry and, in the form of phosphine complexes, in hydrogenation and hydroformylation reactions where it is frequently more efficient than the more commonly used cobalt catalysts. The octane number requirement (ONR) of a car is the octane number which causes barely audible, ie, trace knock when driven by a trained rater. The Coordinating Research Council (CRC), a research organi2ation funded joindy by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA), has defined test procedures for measuring ONR. Each car is driven under a set of light and heavy accelerations until the most sensitive driving mode is determined. Then a series of fuels is mn in the car until trace knock is determined. In the category of industrial appHcations, nylon is the predominant fiber used in the carcass of bias tmck, racing car, and airplane tires because of its exceUent strength, adhesion to mbber, and fatigue resistance. Nylon is used less in the carcass of radial tires for automobiles and in replacement bias and bias-belted tires because of the development of temporary flat spots. Automobiles are the largest source of obsolete scrap. Other important sources of obsolete scrap include the demolition of steel stmctures and railroad companies. Automotive Refinish Paints. Paint for appHcation to automobiles after they have left the assembly plant is a significant market. Although some of this paint is used for fuU repainting, especiaHy of commercial tmcks, most is used for repairs after accidents, commonly just one door or part of a fender, and so forth. In order to be able to serve this market, it is necessary to supply paints that match the colors of aH cars and tmcks, both domestic and imported, that have been manufactured over the previous ten years or so. Repair paints for the larger volume car colors are manufactured and stocked, but for the smaller volume colors formulas are suppHed by the coatings manufacturer to the paint distributor that permit a reasonable color match for any car by mixing standard bases. [Pg.358]

These mechanisms can be observed in many common situations. For example, fog via mixing can be seen in the discharge of breath on a cold day. Fog via adiabatic expansion can be seen in the low-pressure area over the wing of an airplane landing on a humid summer day and fog via condensation can be seen in the exhaust from an automobile air conditioner (if you follow closely enough behind another car to pick up the ions or NO molecules needed for nucleation). Powdered polyethylene is also used to bond cloth interliners to garments. Automobile carpets are often made with a polyethylene rather than a latex backing because the polyethylene-backed carpet can be heat-formed so that the carpet will fit the shape of the car floor and cutting and sewing operations are consequently eliminated. [Pg.238]

The largest outlet for the bituminous plastics has been for automobile battery boxes. Windshield sealants comprise some of the most significant applications of one-component urethane adhesives. Several years ago, the requirements for these sealants were increased. In an accidental rollover, in certain automobiles, the windshield becomes a structural part of the car.
