Automotive Refinish Paints. Paint for appHcation to automobiles after they have left the assembly plant is a significant market. Although some of this paint is used for fuU repainting, especiaHy of commercial tmcks, most is used for repairs after accidents, commonly just one door or part of a fender, and so forth. In order to be able to serve this market, it is necessary to supply paints that match the colors of aH cars and tmcks, both domestic and imported, that have been manufactured over the previous ten years or so. Repair paints for the larger volume car colors are manufactured and stocked, but for the smaller volume colors formulas are suppHed by the coatings manufacturer to the paint distributor that permit a reasonable color match for any car by mixing standard bases. [Pg.358]

According to the 1981-83 National Occupational Exposure Survey (NOES, 1997), as many as 2 million workers in the United States were potentially exposed to toluene (see General Remarks). Occupational exposures to toluene may occur in painting, varnishing, various cleaning operations, laboratories, car repair shops and many other workplaces where toluene is produced or used as solvent or intermediate to prepare other chemicals. For the car reflnish market, it is essential that every colour made can be offered, and here mixing schemes use a range of colour solutions, capable of use alone, or in any blend with any other colour. These are also used to produce metallic paints, and the paint dealer or car repairer will have recipes to mix all the colours they require. The outstanding virtue of zinc-rich paints is simplicity in application. No special equipment is required and the operation can, of course, be carried out on site, large or small structures being equally suitable for treatment. While there is some evidence that the zinc-rich paints will reduce iron oxides remaining on the steel surface, proper surface preparation is as important here as with traditional paints if the best results are to be achieved. Vehicle refinish (VR) coatings are used to repair damaged or corroded car paint systems. They must exhibit the same performance characteristics as the original paint system if they are to meet the car manufacturer s bodywork corrosion warranty. However, the most important feature of VR coatings is their colour. There are approximately 150 million cars on the roads of Europe, painted in over 20000 different colours, and every year a further 600 new colours are added. Paints also age and, depending on climatic conditions, a 10-year-old car may have changed colour considerably. A VR bodyshop must be able to match the colour of the car, irrespective of its age, colour and type of finish (which will usually be either a solid colour, metallic, or pearlescent). This is achieved by the skills of the VR bodyshop and the colour-matching system of the paint manufacturer. [Pg.163]

The painting process for VR differs from that used for new cars. While new car bodies can be heated at 120-140°C to cure the OEM paint system, a car for repair, complete with a tank of petrol, electronic equipment, rubber tyres and other heat-sensitive components, must be treated with care. Hence, cure temperatures of 60°C maximum are used for VR coatings. The solvent systems used must be capable of providing the necessary solubility, application, viscosity and flow characteristics. It must also evaporate quickly enough to enable the bodyshop to complete the repair as soon as possible, often under widely varying temperature and humidity conditions. [Pg.163]

The pressurized hydrolysis technology is available for all TP bumpers of Toyota cars, which are painted with acrylic-melamine resin or alkyd-melamine resin. However, the recovered bumpers contain some repaired ones which are repainted with urethane paint film. The pressurized hydrolysis technology is not available for the urethane paint film because this film is not hydrolyzable with water vapor in such conditions. To maintain the high performance of the recycled material, the repaired bumper must be sorted from the recovered TP bumpers. Considering the difference of the chemical reaction of the paint films with dye agents, a paint film dyeing method was develop>ed. BUlions of dollars are spent each year to prevent corrosion and repair building materials made of iron. One way to prevent corrosion is to paint the bridges, cars, and ships with paints containing materials that seal the iron surface from H2O and O2. If defects are observed, then that car cannot be processed further and paint repair is necessary. Paint imperfections or mechanical damage can occur post-manufacture.
