Career frustration

The Shockley involved in this symposium was ihe same William Shockley who had participated in the invention of the transistor in 1947. Soon after that momentous event, he became very frustrated at Bell Laboratories (and virtually broke with his coinventors, Walter Brattain and John Bardeen), as depicted in detail in a rivetting history of the transistor (Riordan and Hoddeson 1997). For some years, while still working at Bell Laboratories, he became closely involved with dislocation geometry, clearly as a means of escaping from his career frustrations, before eventually turning fulltime to transistor manufacture. [Pg.114]

Most, if not all, textbooks and courses of QM proceed in a similar axiomatic way. At the end of the introduction to QM, most, if not all, students are confused. It takes a long time, several advanced courses, graduate school and often more to master QM. It is ironic that current masters of QM also internalize the paradigm of QM instruction that initially confused and frustrated them, and thus instruct new students in the same way. As a result, those students who take QM as part of a general education and not as the first step of a career in Physics, are left confused forever. It has been found that women see work as a means of self-fulfillment and professional autonomy and consequently may hold higher expectations for their careers than men (Muldary, 1983). Expectations from each role can carry over into the other contexts and can result in little time for women to meet their personal needs. Managers of health professionals need to be aware of and watch for manifestations of these common frustrations.
