Career frustration

The Shockley involved in this symposium was ihe same William Shockley who had participated in the invention of the transistor in 1947. Soon after that momentous event, he became very frustrated at Bell Laboratories (and virtually broke with his coinventors, Walter Brattain and John Bardeen), as depicted in detail in a rivetting history of the transistor (Riordan and Hoddeson 1997). For some years, while still working at Bell Laboratories, he became closely involved with dislocation geometry, clearly as a means of escaping from his career frustrations, before eventually turning fulltime to transistor manufacture. 

Most, if not all, textbooks and courses of QM proceed in a similar axiomatic way. At the end of the introduction to QM, most, if not all, students are confused. It takes a long time, several advanced courses, graduate school and often more to master QM. It is ironic that current masters of QM also internalize the paradigm of QM instruction that initially confused and frustrated them, and thus instruct new students in the same way. As a result, those students who take QM as part of a general education and not as the first step of a career in Physics, are left confused forever. I believe this constitutes a failure of the Physics community to communicate to humanity its most precious, successful and beautiful accomplishment. 

Far too many people get caught up in an employment situation that they hate simply because they re desperate to earn a paycheck. These people refused to do the necessary research and ask the appropriate questions before getting hired, and as a result, they wind up in a dead-end job, working with people they dislike. Once these people get involved in a bad employment situation, they often find it extremely difficult to pursue more rewarding career opportunities. Thus, they become frustrated and depressed, which negatively affects their professional and personal life.

Women health care professionals may also experience unique sets of challenges and expectations within their work environments. It has been found that women see work as a means of self-fulfillment and professional autonomy and consequently may hold higher expectations for their careers than men (Muldary, 1983). Moreover, women health professionals who manage families in addition to their jobs have expectations to fulfill as professionals as well as wives or mothers. Expectations from each role can carry over into the other contexts and can result in little time for women to meet their personal needs. Another problem that can be experienced by women professionals is real or perceived sexism. Although beyond the scope of this chapter, real or perceived sexism can result in added frustrations and resentments that could further contribute to burnout. 

Managers of health professionals need to be aware of and watch for manifestations of these common frustrations. They need to help neophyte professionals cope with this phase of their new careers in part by helping them to realize that these feelings and experiences are not uncommon. If new professionals do not get addihonal guidance and support, many often begin to experience burnout. Managers need to be aware that the most enthusiastic and idealishc health professionals are often the most vulnerable to burnout (Muldary 1983). 

To better understand who is at risk, let s consider the lucky people who are not. Orchestra conductors tend to live long lives and continue their careers well after most folks would want to retire. Why They love their work, they are truly passionate about their art, and despite potential frustration when the violinist or the cello player doesn t hit a note just right, they have enormous control over their situations. Conductors are absolute bosses. Some people might even call them tyrants.

In conclusion, safety and loss prevention professionals cannot stand alone and expect to do an exceptional job. The attributes of a network not only can assist you with the acquisition of basic information and discussion of new ideas but can also serve as a vent at the frustrating moments that everyone encounters throughout their career. Whether your network is next door or on the other side of the world, it is important to establish these linkage with others within the field in order to keep up with the new concepts and new information that are permeating the field of safety and loss prevention on a daily basis. But you have to communicate and become involved to achieve the benefits of the network.
