Politics - continued

Solid waste disposal has been in the limelight and will continue to be a political, emotional, and technical... [Pg.239]

After the war he continued to speak out on political issues, such as his open letter to the United Nations urging the formation of a world government, and his frequent condemnations in the press of Senator Joseph McCarthy s activities. After the death of Chaim Weizmann, the first president of Israel, Einstein was invited but declined to be his successor. [Pg.385]

At the age of sixteen, Townes entered Furman University and received two bachelor s degi ees (modern languages and physics) in 193.S. He continued his education, receiving a master s at Uuke University in 1937 and a doctorate at Cal Tech in 1939. In the summer of 1939, Bell Labs hired him. Numerous lines of research were being undertaken simultaneously at Bell Labs. Most of the work done by Townes initially dealt with basic research and the transmission of telephone and television signals. Worldwide political events, however, soon changed this emphasis. [Pg.1141]

Over the past 30 years, the world food production has grown faster than the population, the major basis of consumption. The world food production increased at an annual rate of 2.4% (grain production increased at 2.7%), while the world population increase is now less than 2% (9). Research and improved technologies have contributed to an increase in food availability, which will continue if an appropriate political, social, and economic environment exists. The world population, now at 5.5 billion, is predicted to be 10 billion in the last quarter of the next century (9) and will place greater demands on the production and processing of food. [Pg.335]

The world population (P) continues to increase, though there is evidence that the rate of increase maybe dechning. The aspirations for the populations of developing coimtries to improve their economic circumstances and political pressure to ehminate excessive disparities of wealth in developed coimtries are such that average prosperity or economic activity (Wp) is also unhkely to show any marked reduction in the foreseeable future. If, as some contend, the world is close to, even beyond, its carrying capacity, then to prevent any further increases (or even to reduce it) it will be necessary to offset increases in P and Wp by proportionate decreases in P v... [Pg.4]

As previously indicated, test methods and standards for bioequivalency determinations are continuing to evolve. In this section of the chapter consideration is given to some of the issues in this areas that presently confront us. In some instances the topics are essentially technical in nature. In others, financial implications introduce political aspects that do not simplify the situation. It seems likely that while some of these questions may be resolved in the relatively near future, others may require years of debate and exploration before a final resolution is achieved. [Pg.752]

Although Patterson insisted that he had no political acumen, he continued his campaign to reach the people who could affect public policy. That fall, he wrote to Senator Edmund S. Muskie of Maine, who chaired the Senate Special Subcommittee on Air and Water. Muskie had just spent two years holding public hearings throughout the United States on air quality he would be the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 1968 and a pres-... [Pg.187]

The political problems with profound economic impact could include, for example, the significance of the continuing worldwide growth of nuclear power, with such issues as the use of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) and Plutonium obtained from tire dismantling of U.S. and former USSR nuclear weapons the urgency of nonproliferation the disposal of civilian and military nuclear waste nuclear power alternatives. [Pg.44]

TurkishModel. Continued and upgraded promotion of the Turkish political and economic model of a secular, multi-party, market democracy. Turkish and US-based NGO s, policy and educational institutes, and multilateral organizations like GUUAM and OSCE can play an important role in adapting the Turkish experience to the particular socio-economic and political conditions in selected countries. The focus of such effort ought to be Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. [Pg.135]

In order to analyse the balance in view of the threat of exclusion from public financing, the author devises a demand equation with a two-stage budget allocation. The first step is to choose a therapeutic group, and the second is to choose the differentiated products. The co-payment acts as the price. The main conclusion is that when the product is included in public financing the health service can receive a discount if the political decisions are price-sensitive and the fixed cost of market entry in the event of inclusion is lower than the fixed cost of exclusion. In his study of price-cap regulation, the author insists that the mechanism should be continued in the long term, and that therefore it is necessary to account for the entire lifetime of the product and consider a discount factor. All this takes as its point of departure Abbott s 1995 model. [Pg.224]

There are serious questions about the effect of continued growth of the human population. We often focus on the matter of adequate food production, but large populations also affect the environment and our need for energy. Chemists can furnish the tools to help deal with the political and social questions. Some population growth occurs not because it is intentional, but because adequate methods for birth control are unavailable to people in poor countries. Thus one challenge for chemists is to develop better methods that would be safe, effective, and inexpensive and would enable all people to pursue their own decisions regarding population growth. [Pg.158]

Despite much effort, antibiotic resistance continues to increase [61]. Looking back, it is clear that this was an inevitable consequence of antibiotic use [62], Antibiotic resistance, which has been recognized to be an important clinical problem, varies in prevalence from one country to another and among the pathogens themselves. This has great clinical, economic, political and environmental implications worldwide [63]. Strict adherence to the ongoing measures of infection control, education and antibiotic policy should minimize antibiotic resistance [64],... [Pg.41]

Gallman and I proceeded to British Undersecretary Hall s office. It was clear from the first that the British wanted no public answer of any kind. I continued to insist. Hall understood that the War Refugee Board had been merely a political move of the President s, and I hastened to correct that false impression. The President meant business, I said, and was determined to have the job done. [Pg.205]

It is not enough to say we do not want Communism in our economy. If we continue on our old political course., then we shall perish.. . . It is the noblest task of the leader to find ideals that are stronger than the factors that pull the people together. I recognized even while in the hospital that one had to search for new ideals conducive to reconstruction. 1 found them in nationalism, in the value of personality, and in the denial of reconciliation between nations.. .. If one rejects pacifism, one must put a new idea in its place immediately. . .. We must not forget that all the benefits of culture must be introduced more or less with an iron fist just as one time the farmer was forced to plant tomatoes.. .. ... [Pg.328]
