General education

There is no more important product of higher education than graduates able to think and able to seek and find the truth. There is nothing more important to think about and discuss the truth about than our impacts on the chemistry of our Planet and the consequence of these impacts. Responsible environmental behavior ought to be one of the primary goals of general education. 

Most, if not all, textbooks and courses of QM proceed in a similar axiomatic way. At the end of the introduction to QM, most, if not all, students are confused. It takes a long time, several advanced courses, graduate school and often more to master QM. It is ironic that current masters of QM also internalize the paradigm of QM instruction that initially confused and frustrated them, and thus instruct new students in the same way. As a result, those students who take QM as part of a general education and not as the first step of a career in Physics, are left confused forever. I believe this constitutes a failure of the Physics community to communicate to humanity its most precious, successful and beautiful accomplishment.

The General Educational Development test contains a 45-minute writing section in which test takers must develop an expository essay that includes personal observations, knowledge, and experience. Julian stayed at Harvard four years on minor fellowships, and then went back south to teach at the West Virginia State College for Negroes. His laboratory had next to no apparatus. He was the one-man chemistry faculty, laboratory storekeeper andjanitor as well (de Kruif, 1946). Julius Stone, Jr., a Harvard classmate and the son of a leading banker and industrialist in Columbus, Ohio, came to Julian s aid. With Stone s financial backing and a General Education Board fellowship, he went to Vienna (de Kruif, 1946) and received a Ph.D. at the University of Vienna in 1931. Julian considered himself to be only the third native-born black to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry (de Kruif, 1946). 

All staff present were told that it is highly likely that they will be interviewed by the auditing team. I hope that each person will take the information they learned in the staff development back to their campus and share it with their principal, special education staff not present, and the general education teachers. 

Our next staff development seminar is scheduled for 8/7/01. We plan to discuss the modification requirements for general education teachers.

First, avoid asking questions to which you do not know the answer. This is not an opportunity for research or general education. Make certain you thoroughly understand the requirements and guidance relevant to your product, and craft questions that do not merely seek factual summary. 

As background, at Georgia Southern University (GSU), a one-semester GOB course has been offered to allied health majors since converting to the semester system in 1998. Allied health at GSU consists of mostly nursing followed by nutrition majors. Additionally, up to 30% of the students enrolled in a section of this course take the one-semester GOB course as a general education requirement. 

Claremont McKenna College (CA) 4-5 Will waive one of the two general education requirements if students receive one or more scores of 4 or 5.
