Carbon fibre composite materials

A rubber-like copolymer/carbon fibre composite material has also been prepared [170]. Carbon fibres were added directly to o/w highly concentrated emulsions of block copolymers, such as styrene/butadiene triblocks (SBS), in toluene, followed by precipitation in methanol, drying and hot-pressing. The surfactant was found to aid adhesion between the polymer and carbon fibres. The materials obtained had fairly even distributions of carbon fibres, good mechanical properties and conductivities which increased with increasing carbon fibre length. [Pg.205]

The importance of carbon-fibre composite materials in the development of the space shuttle cannot be overemphasized. Reinforced carbon-carbon composites are used in the nose cone and wing leading edges to provide the resistance to thermal shock and stress required for re-entry into the Earth s atmosphere. Carbon-carbon composites are a particular group of carbon-fibre reinforced materials in which both the bulk material and fibres are carbon. The... [Pg.826]

Rigidised inflatable structures are those that are fabricated from Shape Memory Polymers (SMP)/carbon fibre composite materials the methods utilised are similar to those used for traditional thermosetting composite structures, except that the epoxy that is used is a lightly cross-linked one. The final deployed shape of the SMP composite structure is established during its initial cure cycle. Once the SMP material is completely cured, it can be... [Pg.765]

In the year to March 31st 2005, on the basis of an exchange rate of 107 yen to the US dollar, Toray s total net sales were 12,137 billion with an operating income of 757 million and a net income of 321 million. This Japanese company holds world market leadership in polyester films and carbon fibre composite materials. [Pg.103]

Modem three layers pressure vessels are under study, which consist of a stressbearing component - an inner polymer liner over-wrapped with a carbon-fibre composite - and an outer aramid-material layer, mechanical and corrosion damage resistant [1]. A system for the gaseous hydrogen storage at room temperature has also been designed, adopting a definite number of linked cylindrical pressure vessels [13]. [Pg.147]

Although the ceramic raw materials have to be transformed into ceramics at relatively high temperatures, particularly silicate ceramic materials require a very low energy consumption for their production (Table 1). Part of the reason for this is that natural raw materials are used, which save energy. On the other hand, the example of carbon-fibre composites shows that high-performance materials can be extremely expensive. [Pg.41]

The effect of chemical treatment on surface of the fibre in which the coupling agent was found to be concentrated on the fibre provided the ability for the covalent bonding formation. In the present study, the above explanation is aplicable to the increase in impact strenth. The effect of mechanical treatment for palmyra fibre surface not to be roughness than coir fibre. The surface of the palmyra fibre is more smooth than the coir fibre surface before mechanical treatmennt, for this case the TS value for palmyra composite materials increase only around 5 - 10 % but for coir composite materials increase around 10 - 15 % and effect of chemical treatment for the coir fibre composite materials better than the palmyra composite materials that is due to palmyra fibre content around 60% carbon atom. Interaction of carbon atom and sodium peroxide is weak. [Pg.644]

Plastic composites such as glass- or carbon-fibre reinforced materials are often based on polar epoxy or polyester resins, and are therefore compatible with the common adhesives as well as being readily bondable. Surface treatment is required simply to remove contaminants such as oils, dirt, and especially fluorocarbon mould release agents. The two main techniques used to achieve this are ... [Pg.104]

The effect of surface treatment on the mechanical properties of carbon-fibre composites Brittle fibres in a brittle matrix can have appreciable toughness because the cracks can get diverted along the fibre-matrix interface. If the bond is weak the composite will not support loads in shear or compression, but when the bond is too strong, the material will be brittle. These aspects are illustrated in Fig. 6, where it is seen that the interlaminar shear strength reaches a plateau but the notched tensile strength decreases... [Pg.180]

Instead of steel, some other type of material would be necessary for the supercar body, some kind of composite or carbon fibre. Such materials are available now, but are not considered cost competitive with steel. But a research centre in Colorado claims that composites can emerge from the mould virtually ready to 10 use. The result would be fewer parts and less labour than current car body construction and, therefore, less cost. [Pg.143]

Loos (2011) reported that investigators from Bayer Material Science LLC, USA and Moulded Fibre Glass, Cleveland, USA have developed a prototype wind turbine blade 0.74 m long manufactured from polyurethane reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT PU). The researchers claim that the advanced material has a specific tensile strength five times and 60 times that of carbon fibre composite and aluminium, respectively, and is tougher than carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) but the excellent properties of these materials come with a price penalty. [Pg.371]
