METHOD 2 [128, 129]--To make dibromodioxane one stirs 500g dioxane in a flask which is in an ice bath, all of which is in the hood. 990g of liquid Bra is rapidly added, causing the solution to get hot (one can also bubble in an approximate amount of bromine from a gas canister). The solution is dumped into a bucket containing 2L of ice water, causing the immediate formation of a large mass of orange dibromodioxane crystals which are separated by vacuum filtration and dried. [Pg.224]

There are some alternatives to this HCI generator type of crystallization. There are, of course, canisters of HCI gas that can be purchased. Also, one can crystallize with very concentrated (fuming) HCI by pouring the stuff directly into the ether/freebase [26]. Regular 35% HCI can do this too, but the water content may dissolve the MDA.HCl or make the crystals sticky which means that the chemist will have to dry the solution by removing the water. [Pg.249]

The main advantage of HGMS is high efficiency of separation even at relatively high dow rates and minimum pressure drops across the filter. Most of the above apphcations are in clarification duties. In unalloyed steel containers formamide discolors slowly during shipment and storage. Both copper and brass are also subject to corrosion, particularly in the presence of water. Lead is less readily attacked. Aluminum and stainless steel are resistant to attack by formamide and should be used for shipping and storage containers where the color of the product is important or when metallic impurities must be minimized. Formamide attacks natural mbber but not neoprene. As a result of the solvent action of formamide, most protective paints and finishes are unsatisfactory when in contact with formamide. Therefore, formamide is best shipped in containers made of stainless steel or in dmms made of, or coated with, polyethylene. Formamide supphed by BASF is packed in Lupolen dmms (230 kg) or Lupolen canisters (60 kg) both in continental Europe and overseas. [Pg.509]

Although the charcoal canisters are about 95% effective, fuel volatiUty still impacts the mass of vapors that break through the canister. Therefore, EPA mandated that starting in the summer of 1992, RVP levels be reduced below the levels specified in ASTM D4814. Extreme caution must be taken to prevent the possibility of fire when using flammable removers. Extra care must be taken when stripping on location to secure the area of ignition sources. When used on lacquer finishes, the dissolved finish and remover combined are extremely flammable. Natural mbber, neoprene, or other gloves suitable for use with the remover formula must be worn. The effect of skin contact with the remover is limited because there is immediate irritation and discomfort. Canister respirators are available for most petroleum and oxygenate remover solvents. Symptoms of long-term overexposure should be compared to symptoms of the major ingredients in the formula. [Pg.552]

Health and Safety. Protective clothing that is compatible with the remover formula must be worn. Caustic soda baths should be ventilated to remove vapors from the work area. Most caustic removers are corrosive and cause severe bums with minimal contact to the skin. Canister respirators that are compatible with the remover should be worn. [Pg.553]

In consumer appHcations, titanium is used in golf club heads, jewelry, eyeglass frames, and watches. The Japanese have promoted the use of titanium in roofing and monuments. Other appHcation areas include nuclear-waste storage canisters, pacemaker castings, medical implants, high performance automotive appHcations, and ordnance armor. [Pg.110]

Ethylene dibromide is a suspected human carcinogen and worker exposure by all routes should be carefiiUy controUed to levels as low as reasonably achievable (67). Ethylene dibromide causes severe blistering of the skin if contact is prolonged. Eye contact with the Hquid will cause pain, irritation, and temporary impairment of vision. Recommended safety equipment includes safety goggles, a NIOSH approved canister-type gas mask for organic vapors, neoprene gloves, and neoprene overshoes. In case of contact with ethylene dibromide, contaminated clothing and shoes should be removed and eyes or skin washed with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Contaminated clothes should be washed before reuse and contaminated shoes should be discarded. [Pg.295]
