Moreover, resveratrol, a compound found at high levels in red wine, induces apoptosis via increased generation of de novo-generated ceramide in breast cancer cells in situ (Scarlatti et al., 2003, 2007 Minutolo et al., 2005). [Pg.428]

Resveratrol has been shown to inhibit proliferation, induce differentiation, and enhance the expression of adhesion molecules (GDI la, GDI lb, GDIS, GD54) in a variety of myeloid leukemia cell lines [144]. The inhibitory effect of resveratrol on cell survival and proliferation of human breast cancer cells was shown to be estrogen receptor dependent [145]. Other studies indicated that it was very effective in inhibiting growth of 4T1 breast cancer cells in culture but had little effect on 4T1 tumor cell growth in mice [146]. In stark contrast, resveratrol was tested against mammary tumors induced by 7, 12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) in rats [147]. In this case, reductions in incidence, multiplicity, and latency period of tumor development were observed. Additional... [Pg.239]

Recently it has been shown that resveratrol induces the cAMP/kinase-A system, which makes it a pro-apoptotic and cell-cycle-repressing agent in breast cancer cells. Having such mechanistic activity would suggest that resveratrol might be an effective agent... [Pg.280]

Chemoprevention is an emerging and promising approaeh to control human cancer. Several natnral products have been proven to have potentials as anticancer agents. Resveratrol is one such compound. Recently, increasing interest has focused on examining the effect of resveratrol in breast cancer prevention and treatment. The present review summarizes the recent studies on the role of resveratrol in cancer prevention and therapy, especially in human breast cancer, that provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of resveratrol. The estrogenic activity of resveratrol, as well as its in vitro and in vivo antiproliferative and chemoprotective activities, will be discussed here. [Pg.542]

EFFECT OF RESVERATROL ON BREAST CANCER CELL PROLIFERATION IN VITRO... [Pg.546]

In several cancer cell lines, resveratrol is capable of inducing apoptosis. In breast cancer cells, Pozo-Guisado et al. ° showed that resveratrol induced apoptosis in MCF-7 but not in MDA-MB-231 cells. Nevertheless, it inhibited cell proliferation in both cell lines. This result suggests that the mechanisms of antiproliferative effect of resveratrol are both apoptotic and nonapoptotic cell death. [Pg.547]
