In this chapter the application of multichannel IR detector arrays to mammalian tissue is discussed from a practical perspective. The major emphasis will be on the application of the technology to cervical cancer diagnosis focusing on sample preparation, instrumental parameters, data processing techniques and correlation with histology. The next part of the chapter focuses on the application of the technique to arthritis research by investigating the effect of specific antibodies that induce an arthritic type of response in bovine cartilage explants. In the final part of the chapter... [Pg.204]

Streaming potentials are also generated by deformation of the tissue. Lee et al. [14] and Frank et al. [4] measured streaming potentials generated by oscillatory compression experiments. Chen et al. [2] measured streaming potentials in confined compression experiments. In these experiments, bovine cartilage discs were subjected to step changes of the compressive stress. [Pg.134]

Here, is the electrical potential and a is the mechanical load. The value for the electrokinetic coefficient ke for bovine cartilage was found to be in the range from -2 to -12 mV MPa-1 [2],... [Pg.138]

In our confined swelling and compression experiment, we also applied a mechanical load to the sample (t = 12.5 h). We measured a streaming potential A = 0.85 0.65 mV. The change in the mechanical load A a equals -0.117 MPa. Thus, the value for the electrokinetic coefficient is —7.3 5.6 mV MPa-1. This was in the same range as measured for bovine cartilage. [Pg.138]

We were able to measure the electrical potential difference over a sample, that was caused by a change in the mechanical load or by a change in the chemical load. When altering only the mechanical load, the measured electrical potential difference was in the same range as reported for bovine cartilage. [Pg.138]

The biochemical properties of chloroquine and related anti-malarials have been exeonined further. In addition to its inhibition of the biosynthesis of sulfated mucopolysaccharides, chloroquine inhibits irreversibly an autolytic enzyme from bovine cartilage and a rat skin collagenase (at 10 mM). Like hydrocortisone, it inhibits chemotaocis of leukocytes and, to a lesser extent, the phagocytosis process. It also stabilizes lysosomal membranes in vitro. Potential "anti-degenerative" activity is clearly suggested by these properties, but unfortunately the well-known retinopathic effect is further complicated by a delayed symptom. [Pg.223]

In Hoffman (1999), the following statanent is made Some of the sources noted for various protease inhibitors and proteinase inhibitors include black-eyed peas, lima beans, kidney beans, wheat and rye germ, potatoes, bovine cartilage, bee venom, and viper venom. Human bronchial secretions and guinea pig blood are other sources. [Pg.137]

A special note should be made concerning the doctoral thesis by Lawrence Malcom in 1976 [36]. This is an excellent study of cartilage friction and deformation, in which a device resembling a rotary plate rheometer was used to investigate the effects of static and dynamic loading on the frictional behavior of bovine cartilage. The contact geometry consisted of a circular cylindrical annulus in contact with a concave hemispherical section. It was found that dynamically loaded specimens in bovine synovial fluid yielded the... [Pg.878]

A previously unrecognized cartilage-matrix protein associated with proteoglycans was identified when the proteoglycans of bovine cartilage were isolated in the absence of dissociative solvents. The protein (mol. wt. 2 X 10 ) which co-fractionated with proteoglycan in all systems contains sub-units (mol. wt. 6x10" ). [Pg.349]
