Biological limits are also in force for lead and its compounds under the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 1998 different blood lead action, and suspension from work, levels apply to women of reproductive capacity, young persons and other employees. 

These are ceiling values that must not be exceeded when calculating 8 hr TWA. They should be read in conjunction with biological limits for lead. 

The first step is to identify the substances present at the workplace. As a starting point, knowledge of the process is needed in order to formulate a list of all chemical agents used in the establishment. The list should include not only primary products but also intermediate and final products, as well as reaction products and by-products. For the chemical agents in the list, it is necessary to know their chemical properties, especially hazardous ones their OEL values, including biological limit values and, where these are not available, other technical criteria that can be used to evaluate the risk. It is also helpful to include any information on the safety and health risks of those substances provided by the supplier or other readily available sources. This information on dangerous substances and preparations, in the form of safety data sheets, is intended primarily for industrial users, to enable them to take the measures necessary to ensure the safety and health of workers. 

For the biological limitation of trace metal internalisation, complex formation will invariably decrease the concentration of free metal ion and thus decrease the biouptake fluxes and carrier-bound metal (FIAM, BLM). In the case of a diffusion-limited internalisation, complex labilities and mobilities become much more pertinent when determining uptake fluxes. As shown earlier, few experiments have been designed to identify diffusion limitation of metal uptake fluxes, despite the fact that such a limitation is possible (Figure 10). Toxicity data on niobium and its compounds are sparse. The most common materials, e.g., niobium concentrates, ferroniobium, niobium metal and niobium alloys, appear to be relatively inert biologically. Limited animal experiments show high toxicity for some salts, which arc related to disturbance of enzyme action, Niobium hydride lias moderate fibiogenic and general toxic action. Recommended maximum allowable concentrations arc 6 mg/m3. Recommended maximum permissible concentration of Nb ill reservoir water is 0.01 mg/L. The threshold for affecting clarity and biological oxygen demand (BOD) is 0.1 mg/L.

Within this guidance the term occupational exposure limit(s) refers to limits in the air of the workplace or biological limit values. In addition, for the purposes of this document exposure control means the full range of specific protection and prevention measures to be taken during use in order to minimize worker and environmental exposure. Engineering control measures that are needed to minimize exposure to, and risks associated with the hazards of, the substance or mixture should be included in this section. 

It appears to be due to a deficiency in aldehyde isozyme, which leads to a buildup of acetaldehyde when drinking, as alcohol metabolism is disrupted. The acetaldehyde causes the flushing response. The important point is that this response is assumed to be unpleasant to most people and thus may set a biological limit on the amount of alcohol that is drunk on an occasion (Kitano, 1989). 

Not following the scientific advice for extended periods bears considerable and increasing risk, whereas population modeling of the development of the population in the absence of fishing and assuming the low recruitment pattern of the past 10-15 years would still allow the population to increase above safe biological limits with 3-5 years (ICES, 2003, 2005). Recovery would occur even faster during the moratorium period if an inflow occurred that would increase reproductive success. 

In a rayon production factory, exposure to carbon disulfide was measured by personal air sampling and the excretion of TTCA in urine (Meuling et al. 1990). Based on the personal air-sampling, the TWA exposure level for carbon disulfide was 12.6 mg/m3 (4 ppm). The study authors established a calculated biological limit value of 0.77 mg TTCA/g creatinine (0.57 mmol/mol creatinine) to correspond with 95% confidence, to a TWA air concentration lower than the threshold limit value (TLV) of 30 mg/m3.
