Benzoyl peroxide lotions

The cleansing lotions contain benzoyl peroxide 4% and 8%, respectively, in a lathering vehicle containing purified water, cetyl alcohol, citric acid, dimethyl isosorbide, docusate sodium, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, laureth-12, 

Sift the Polargel NF into water with rapid mixing. Allow to hydrate for 15 minutes. 

Pass through coarse sieve, add item 2, and mix until all lumps are removed. 

Add parabens to the water with stirring and heat to 90°C to dissolve parabens. 

Add items 4-10 and mix well and then add these to the item 2 part. Mix well again. Finally, add items 11-13 and mix.

A clinical trial on 124 patients with acne, randomly distributed to a group treated with 5% tea tree oil gel or a 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion group (Bassett et al., 1990), showed improvement in both groups and fewer side effects in the tea tree oil group. The use of tea tree oil has, however, had detrimental effects in some people (Lis-Balchin, 2006). 

Aluminum hydroxide gel is also used as the suspending agent for Theroxide 5% and 10% benzoyl peroxide lotions. 

It is available with or without a prescription and remains the most commonly purchased over-the-counter topical treatment for acne.12 Benzoyl peroxide is available in concentrations ranging from 1% to 10% in various formulations including creams, lotions, gels, and facial washes. 

It is available as 1% or 2% concentrations in gel, lotion, solution, foam, and disposable pad formulations and is usually applied twice daily. Combination with benzoyl peroxide increases efficacy. 

Application to the face as lotion for acne treatment in two persons caused facial erythema and edema patch tests with benzoyl peroxide were positive. In contact with the eyes it may produce irritation, and if allowed to... 

Burton et al. reported the assay of benzoic acid, ethyl benzoate, and benzoyl peroxide in dermatological gels and lotions [33]. These workers used a Waters p-Bondapak C g column and UV detection at 254-nm. A mixture of 50% aqueous acetonitrile was used as the mobile phase. 

Clindamycin has in vitro activity against Propionibacterium acnes this has been postulated as the mechanism of its beneficial effect in acne therapy. Approximately 10% of an applied dose is absorbed, and rare cases of bloody diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis have been reported following topical application. The hydroalcoholic vehicle may cause drying and irritation of the skin, with complaints of burning and stinging. The water-based gel and lotion formulations are well tolerated and less likely to cause irritation. Allergic contact dermatitis is uncommon. Clindamycin is also available in a fixed-combination topical gel with benzoyl peroxide (BenzaClin). 

Benzoyl peroxide is available as creams, lotions, gels and washes (2.5, 5 and 10%, and a 4% cream). There is little difference in clinical response to these concentrations in terms of reducing the number of inflammatory lesions, but formulation appears to make a difference. The drying effect of an alcoholic gel base enhances the effectiveness of the active constituent, and it is more effective than a lotion of the same concentration. However, gels have a greater potential for causing skin dryness and irritation than preparations in aqueous bland bases, so water-based preparations may improve compliance. 

Benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide encourages peeling of the ontermost layer of the skin and, as mentioned previously, is a mild bactericidal agent. It kills bacteria by virtue of its oxidizing properties. It is often inclnded in prescription acne medications, and in nonprescription acne prodncts snch as gels, lotions, and cleansers. It may be used alone or with other treatments. At even low concentrations (2.5-10%), benzoyl peroxide diminishes the popnlation of Propionibacterium acnes. The most common adverse effects are dry skin and bleaching of the skin.
