Benzoyl peroxide is used as a bleaching agent in wheat flour, but its more familiar use is as a powerful acne medication that can lay claim to the following benefits ... 

Sulfur was once quite common in acne medications, but while it was effective at reducing inflammatory lesions, it caused more whiteheads and blackheads, from which the inflammatory lesions form. For this reason, it is usually combined with something like salicylic acid, or resorcinol, to eliminate the comedones. 

Sulfur is used in acne medications to treat inflamed lesions (pimples). It can cause whiteheads and blackheads (comedones) if used by itself, so it is usually combined with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or resorcinol, which eliminates comedones. 

Camphor is used in acne medications, cough remedies, ear drops, and other medications where its ability to soothe the skin helps it to counter the effects of other ingredients that might otherwise be irritants. 

Exposure to benzoyl peroxide may occur in its manufacture and use as an initiator in polymer production, food bleaching and rubber curing. Consumer exposure occurs from acne medications and dental products containing benzoyl peroxide.

Benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide encourages peeling of the ontermost layer of the skin and, as mentioned previously, is a mild bactericidal agent. It kills bacteria by virtue of its oxidizing properties. It is often inclnded in prescription acne medications, and in nonprescription acne prodncts snch as gels, lotions, and cleansers. It may be used alone or with other treatments. At even low concentrations (2.5-10%), benzoyl peroxide diminishes the popnlation of Propionibacterium acnes. The most common adverse effects are dry skin and bleaching of the skin.
