Dimethyl isosorbide

Dimethyl isosorbide (VI) has been prepared in quantitative yield from isosorbide and dimethyl sulphate according to known procedure (1). It is a liquid possessing a low vapor pressure at room temperature and boiling point of 95°C at 0.1 mm Hg. In addition, it also possesses optical activity. It is expected to be a relatively inexpensive solvent (for an optical active solvent with 100% purity of the optical isomer) in comparison to... [Pg.180]

Dimethyl isomannide (VII) has both methoxy groups in endo-position and might even have better complexation than dimethyl isosorbide (as discussed above for isomannide). However, it does not have optical activity. [Pg.181]

Dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) is a colourless liquid with excellent solvent properties. DMI has extremely low toxicity and facilitates the penetration of active ingredients through the epidermis. It has shown interesting properties in the delivery of substances like lactic acid, hydrocortisone, vitamin C and hyalmonic acid. It is a solvent with clear potential for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications. [Pg.260]

The double dehydration of sorbitol yields D-isosorbide (l,4 3,6-dianhydrohexitol), a white, biodegradable, nontoxic solid. It is used in medicine to treat glaucoma. Other medications are derived from isosorbide, including isosorbide dinitrate and isosorbide mononitrate used to treat angina pectoris. The high thermal stability makes isosorbide interesting as a monomeric building block for thermoplastic polymers such as polyester and polycarbonates. The electrophilic alkylation of isosorbide with dimethyl sulfate yields dimethyl isosorbide, a colorless liquid which is used as a plasticizer for vinyl polymers and as a solvent in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations. [Pg.225]
