Sodium docusate

Docusate Sodium. Aerosol OT, Colace, and Doxinate are trade names of docusate sodium [577-11-7] (dioctyl sodium sulfo succinate, sodium salt of l,4-bis(2-etliylhexyl)estet butanedioic). This white, wax-like, plastic sohd, with a characteristic odor suggestive of octyl alcohol, is usually available in the form of pellets. One gram of the sodium salt slowly dissolves in about 70 mL water. Docusate sodium is freely soluble in alcohol and glycerol, very... [Pg.201]

Docusate sodium is both a surface-active agent for use as a fecal softener, and a wetting agent in industrial, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food apphcations. [Pg.202]

Fiscal softeners promote water retention in the fecal mass and soften the stool. One difference between emollient laxatives and fecal softeners is that the emollient laxatives do not promote the retention of water in the stool. Examples of fecal softeners include docusate sodium (Cblace)and docusate caldum (Surfak). [Pg.475]

Rhinocort Aqua and Nasonex are preparations containing topical nasal corticosteroids (budesonide and mometasone furoate respectively). Otrivine contains a nasal decongestant (xylometazoline) and Sudafed is a systemic preparation containing a nasal decongestant (phenylephrine). Molcer is a preparation for ear-wax removal and which contains docusate sodium. Emadine contains an antihistamine (emedastine) and is presented as eye drops. [Pg.31]

Docusate sodium is a preparation used for softening ear wax before removal. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid, whereas gentamicin, neomycin and clioquinol are antibacterial agents. Otitis externa may be managed by the use of antibacterial preparations used alone or in combination with topical corticosteroids. [Pg.207]

Dexamethasone and betamethasone are corticosteroids available for topical application in eye products. Docusate sodium is indicated for ear wax removal. [Pg.255]

DOCUSATE SODIUM (Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate DSS) Give in milk, fruit juice, or infant formula to mask taste. In enemas, add 50 to 100 mg (5 to 10 mL liquid) to a retention or flushing enema. [Pg.1403]

Do not give docusate sodium if mineral oil is being given. [Pg.1409]

Lactation Anthraquinone derivatives (eg, casanthranol, cascara sagrada, danthron) are excreted in breast milk resulting in a potential increased incidence of diarrhea in the nursing infant. Sennosides A and B (eg, senna) are not excreted in breast milk. It is not known whether docusate calcium, docusate potassium, docusate sodium, lactulose, and mineral oil are excreted in breast milk. [Pg.1410]
