D. Baird, Baird Associates s commercial three-meter grating spectrograph and the transformation of analytical chemistry , Rittenhouse, 1991, 5, 65-80. [Pg.227]

In the text inside the brochure BA acknowledges that wet chemical methods are more versatile than spectrographic methods, which, in turn, are more versatile than spectro-metric methods. But the decrease in versatility—if you can believe advertising—surely is compensated by the savings in money, person power, and time. Another advertising brochure for spectromet notes that one "regularly trained person, probably of shop origin, may operate Spectromet" (Baird Associates, 1956, p. 3). [Pg.109]

Baird Associates was founded by my father, Walter Baird, and two associates John Sterner and Harry Kelly. More detail on the founding of BA and my relationship to BA is in Baird (1991). More detail on the history summarized in this section can be found in Baird 2000a and 2000b. [Pg.111]

Davis Baird received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, and is currently associate professor and chair of the department of philosophy at the University of South Carolina. He comes to an interest in the philosophy of chemistry through his interest in scientific instrumentation, particularly instrumentation developed in analytical chemistry. He has a personal stake in analytical instrumentation—he is the son of Walter Baird, founder in 1936 of Baird Associates, one of the early developers of analytical instrumentation. He currently is working on a book on the history of Baird Associates. [Pg.313]

Apparatus for infrared spectroscopy became commercially available at the end of World War II. After a few years, instrument manufacturers became concerned that their sales would be limited by a scarcity of users who were knowledgeable in the measurement and interpretation of infrared spectra. In 1949 Walter Baird and Bruce Billings of Baird Associates and Van Zandt Williams of the Perkin-Elmer Corporation came separately to Professor Richard C. Lord of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a leading academic researcher in the field. They explained their concern and asked him to present a short course to provide rapid training in the subject. Lord was interested but did not want to undertake the project by himself, so he invited the author to join him in the venture. [Pg.574]

However, it was a very stimulating experience. A number of knowledgeable people from the instrument companies were present, including Van Zandt Williams of Perkin-Elmer, Bruce Billings and David Z. Robinson from Baird Associates, and William S. Gallaway of Beckman Instruments. They commented freely, and the ensuing class discussion was lively and instructive. [Pg.575]

Historically, before the mid-19 " century, the methane concentration was approximately constant at about 0.75 ppm, but it has risen continually since then and had reached almost 1.75 ppm by 1994. In the 1970s, the rate of increase was twice as much as that in the 1980s, and in the early 1990s it temporarily became almost zero. It is not known with certainty why the growth rate decreased and has fluctuated recently, though some scientists have speculated that it is related to the air temperature decreases associated with the explosion of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines (Baird, 1999). [Pg.38]
