Winds, prevailing

Many factors would influence the dosage to be used. In loose, frame structures such as the barracks, the high and irregular winds prevailing at the time of treatment undoubtedly were responsible for lack of kill in several instances, and made comparisons very difficult. The direction and velocity of the wind would influence the choice of a location from which to fog a building, and it might be necessary to fog from more than one position. [Pg.66]

The balloons were released from J apan one by one in the autumn of 1944 to be carried by easterly winds(prevailing at an altitude of ca 5 miles) toward Canada or the US. These balloons de-cended mostly in the Pacific coast area, such as Brit Columbia, Washington, Oregon a few in Calif. Some balloons were carried to central or even eastern parts of Canada and the US. Total number of recovered balloons was ca 300, but many unquestionably have remained undiscovered because of the vastness of uninhabited territory on this continent. Some of the balloons travelled 6000 miles in 4 days at an average speed of ca 70 mph... [Pg.11]

In the spring-summer period, warm and fair weather with weak winds prevails. In July, the mean monthly temperature over the entire sea equals 23-25 °C, while its maximum values reach more than 30 °C. In this season, especially in the spring, Mediterranean cyclones often pass over the sea they are accompanied by westerly and southwesterly winds with speeds of 4-6 m/s, and sometimes by gusts. [Pg.66]

In mild ice winters, mild southwesterly or westerly winds prevail. Ice forming at sea in the Bay of Bothnia and at times in the Gulf of Finland breaks up and compresses off the Finnish coast, where locally severe ice conditions may occur temporarily. [Pg.229]

Fig. 1.24 displays the model results at the horizontal resolution of the data set (2°). Strong northerly winds prevail during winter, from November to March. On balance during the year, weaker winds are characteristic of... [Pg.30]

Figure 5 illustrates the documented pollution transport trajectories. The majority of these pathways occur in the mid-latitude and Polar regions of both hemisphere s where stronger winds prevail. By contrast, little long-range pollution has been reported within the tropics. The most well documented long-range... [Pg.110]

Cooling Towers. The cooling tower location relative to the prevailing wind direction should be such that the wind hits the short side or the side perpendicular to the inlet louvers. This helps balance the air flow to the two inlet sides. [Pg.79]

Air recirculation. Prevailing winds and the locations and elevations of buildings, equipment, fired heaters, etc., require consideration. All air-cooled heat exchangers in a bank are of one type, i.e., all forced-draft or all induced-draft. Banks of air-cooled exchangers must be placed far enough apart to minimize air recirculation. [Pg.1081]

The problem with Eq, (26-60) is that the eddy diffusivity changes with position, time, wind velocity, and prevailing atmospheric conditions, to name a few, and must be specified prior to a solution to the equation, This approach, while important theoretically, does not provide a practical framework for the solution of vapor dispersion problems,... [Pg.2342]

Prior to an anticipated air release of a hazardous material, a circular evacuation strategy may be appropriate. Evacuation might also be initiated for a keyhole-shaped area baised on prevailing wind conditions. These strategies are illustrated below. When a large number of people aie involved, the evacuation should be staged, that is, arc ls closest to the site should be evacuated first and the evacuation zone gradually expanded. [Pg.12]

Step 3 Calculate the distance from the center of the flame to a position with coordinates x and z, representing personnel or equipment exposed to radiation from the flame. (Since the limiting case is the one in which the flame is blown over in the direction of the exposed personnel or equipment, they are in the same plane and a two-coordinate system is adequate for describing their relative locations). Note also that all wind directions must be considered, even in locations which have a prevailing wind direction. [Pg.299]

Prevailing wind direction The direction from which the wind is most frequent for a given period. [Pg.1469]

Windbreak A natural or artificial barrier that protects a building from the prevailing winds. [Pg.1488]

Sulfur dio.vide is being emitted from a stack at a rate of 50 sefs, and the prevailing wind velocity is 15 ft/s. The stack e. it gas velocity is 60 ft/s. The stack diameter is 3.5 feet. Estimate tlie physical stack height necessary to meet an air pollution standard of 5 ppiiiv nia.xinimii SO2 (30 min average concentration) GLC. [Pg.393]
