1 -Asparagine

The R-group of this amide derivative of aspartic acid has no acidic or basic properties but is polar and participates in hydrogen bond formation. It is hydrolyzed to aspartic acid and ammonia by the enzyme asparaginase. In glycoproteins, the carbohydrate side chain is often linked through the amide group of asparagine. [Pg.25]


M.p. 234-235 C. Hydrolyses to aspartic acid. L-asparagine can be prepared from lupin seedlings, and DL-asparagine is synthesised from ammonia and maleic anhydride. L-asparagine is very widely distributed in plants, being found in all the Leguminosae and Gramineae, and in many other seeds, roots and buds. [Pg.43]

The phenolic hydroxyl group of tyrosine, the imidazole moiety of histidine, and the amide groups of asparagine and glutamine are often not protected in peptide synthesis, since it is usually unnecessary. The protection of the hydroxyl group in serine and threonine (O-acetylation or O-benzylation) is not needed in the azide condensation procedure but may become important when other activation methods are used. [Pg.229]
