Simulation tools are available for sizing and analyzing plants. However, these tools do not replace the designer as the architect of the plant because selection of process and the sequenciag of units are the designers choices. The same is tme for heat-exchanger networks. Most of the commercial process simulator companies market computer modules that perform some of the tedious steps ia the process but none is able to remove the designer from the process. [Pg.518]

Eor all the excitement and enthusiasm of the computer architects, these computers did not meet with great success in the marketplace, and few companies remain as viable entities. One of the primary reasons for their demise seems to have been the simultaneous rise of the RISC work stations, which killed off numerous other architectural initiatives, hence the term killer micros (11). [Pg.93]

The C50 molecule contains 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons. This type of hexagonal-pentagonal structure closely resembles the geodesic domes developed by the architect and engineer R. Buckminster Fuller, after whom the molecule is named. In the Csn molecule each carbon atom is bonded to three... [Pg.9]

After a complete study of quantitative factors, the selection of the building or buildings must be considered. Standard factory buildings are to be desired but if none can be found satisfactory to handle the space and process requirements of the chemical engineer, an architect specializing in this area should be consulted to design a building around the process - as opposed to a beautiful structure into which a process must fit. [Pg.171]

Flat roofs. Flat roofs are popular with architects due to their reduced visual impact. However, they generally require a much higher standard of waterproofing, and may be susceptible to ponding, moss growth and dirt/debris entrapment. Inevitably, they also require internal down-pipes for rainwater disposal. [Pg.44]

In other cases, where perhaps the requirements are ill defined, or there is concern over some particular aspect of the project, it may well be more appropriate to have the project designed and/or managed by independent professionals. For example, most industrial building projects are best suited to an engineer-led approach. If, however, the owner is particularly concerned about the architectural aspects of the scheme, he may prefer to make his own selection and appointment of an architect. [Pg.45]

Building costs per square meter for the construction of new buildings can readily be obtained from reference books such as Span s Architects and Builders Price Book and Paxton s Building Price Book. Both are updated and issued on an annual basis, with the costs quoted based on the previous year s statistics. [Pg.52]
