American Institute of Architects

Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was bom in Milton, Massachusetts. He received many architectural awards including the Gold Medals of the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects. He received 47 honorary doctorates, was awarded 27 U.S. patents, and wrote 25 books. He is best known for his introduction of the geodesic dome for buildings. There are now over 300,000 geodesic domes in the world.

Contact your local branch of the American Institute of Architects (AlA) to obtain a list of firms in your area who specialize in industrieil facility design. Ask friends and business associates who have been through the process for their recommendations, fisit faciUties in your area that you admire and find out who designed them. If there are firms in your area that specialize in the type of stracture that you are planning, add them to your list.

Written documents called General Conditions, Special Conditions, and Supplemental Conditions are included as important parts of the contract. These set down the various procedures to be followed by the eontract parties in constructing the project. The American Institute of Architects publishes a model of these documents (AIA document A201) that is the standard of the construction industry.

Similar structures were designed in New Orleans, Louisiana, following Hurricane Katrina. In 2010, the Special No. 9 House, designed by John G. Wilhams Architects for the Brad Pitt Make It Right Foundation, won the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (AIA/COTE) Top Ten Green Projects Award. The FLOAT house, also in New Orleans, is another Make It Right Foundation project developed by Morphosis Architects under the direction of architect and University of California, Los Angeles, professor Thom Mayne.

Engineers and other technical professionals are likely to interact with members of other professions who, in turn, belong to professional societies such as the American Bar Association (ABA), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) of the American Planning Association (APA), the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). These groups have codes of ethics tailored to their functions and responsibilities.

MAPEI helped the community while participating in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Convention in New Orleans earlier this year. On May 11, the day before the convention began, MAPEI joined a unified AEC Cares team, spearheaded by Reed Construction Data, the AIA Council of Architectural Component Executives (CACE) and Hanley Wood, working to restore parts of the New Orleans, LA, community.
