Aqueous processing solvent extraction

The principle of solvent extraction in refining is as follows when a dilute aqueous metal solution is contacted with a suitable extractant, often an amine or oxime, dissolved in a water-immiscible organic solvent, the metal ion is complexed by the extractant and becomes preferentially soluble in the organic phase. The organic and aqueous phases are then separated. By adding another aqueous component, the metal ions can be stripped back into the aqueous phase and hence recovered. Upon the identification of suitable extractants, and using a multistage process, solvent extraction can be used to extract individual metals from a mixture. [Pg.168]

Investigations into avoid this danger have taken place. Extended anionic surfactants have been employed to extract corn oil instead of hexane [17]. These extractions were shown to extract 83% of the oil available and also maintained the composition of the corn oil when compared to extractions carried out using hexane. A mixture of enzymes to extract oil from Irvingia gabonensis kernels was employed controlled, ordered addition of the enzymes optimized the extraction of the oil up to 90% efficiency [18]. Similar protocols were applied to the extraction of canola oil [19] and showed that the enzymatically assisted extractions were more efficient than by using water alone and produced better oil quality than both aqueous and solvent extractions. The efficiency of the process in this instance was significantly increased from those previously stated (circa 25%). [Pg.122]

The very simple macrocycle, the easy-to-prepare system meso-octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole 3, which has been already mentioned in this chapter, can act as both a cation (Cs+) and an anion (Cl or Br ) receptor forming a complex of 1 1 1 cesium calix[4]pyrrole halide stoichiometry, under conditions of aqueous nitrobenzene solvent extraction (Figure 25). Control studies involving nitrate revealed no evidence of ion pairing for CSNO3 under conditions identical to those where it was observed for CsCl and CsBr, thus enlightening the high selectivity of the process. [Pg.1269]

Butadiene Separation. Solvent extraction is used in the separation of butadiene (qv) [106-99-0] from other C-4 hydrocarbons in the manufacture of synthetic mbber. The butadiene is produced by catalytic dehydrogenation of butylene and the Hquid product is then extracted using an aqueous cuprammonium acetate solution with which the butadiene reacts to form a complex. Butadiene is then recovered by stripping from the extract. Distillation is a competing process. [Pg.79]

Caprolactam Extraction. A high degree of purification is necessary for fiber-grade caprolactam, the monomer for nylon-6 (see Polyamides). Cmde aqueous caprolactam is purified by solvent extractions using aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene as the solvent (233). Anhydrous Acetic Acid. In the manufacture of acetic acid by direct oxidation of a petroleum-based feedstock, solvent extraction has been used to separate acetic acid [64-19-7] from the aqueous reaction Hquor containing significant quantities of formic and propionic acids. Isoamyl acetate [123-92-2] is used as solvent to extract nearly all the acetic acid, and some water, from the aqueous feed (236). The extract is then dehydrated by azeotropic distillation using isoamyl acetate as water entrainer (see DISTILLATION, AZEOTROPIC AND EXTRACTIVE). It is claimed that the extraction step in this process affords substantial savings in plant capital investment and operating cost (see Acetic acid and derivatives). Solvent Resistance. Elastomeric fibers tend to swell in certain organic solvents mbber fibers swell in hydrocarbon solvents such as hexane. Spandex fibers become highly swollen in chlorinated solvents such as tetrachloroethylene [127-18-4] (Perclene). Although the physical properties of spandex fibers return to normal after the solvent evaporates, considerable amounts of its stabilizers may have been extracted. Therefore, the development of stabilizers that are more resistant to solvent extraction has become important as solvent scouring during mill processing replaces aqueous scouring at many mills, especially in Europe (26). [Pg.309]

Soybean concentrate production involves the removal of soluble carbohydrates, peptides, phytates, ash, and substances contributing undesirable flavors from defatted flakes after solvent extraction of the oil. Typical concentrate production processes include moist heat treatment to insolubilize proteins, followed by aqueous extraction of soluble constituents aqueous alcohol extraction and dilute aqueous acid extraction at pH 4.5. [Pg.470]

Another characteristic of the solvent extraction system is the high solute concentration in both aqueous and organic phases, which influences greatly the size of the required installation. Concentrations of rare-earth oxides (REO) higher than 100 g/L are often reached in both phases. The process therefore requires only relatively small equipment. [Pg.544]

The purified acid is recovered from the loaded organic stream by contacting with water in another countercurrent extraction step. In place of water, an aqueous alkafl can be used to recover a purified phosphate salt solution. A small portion of the purified acid is typically used in a backwashing operation to contact the loaded organic phase and to improve the purity of the extract phase prior to recovery of the purified acid. Depending on the miscibility of the solvent with the acid, the purified acid and the raffinate may be stripped of residual solvent which is recycled to the extraction loop. The purified acid can be treated for removal of residual organic impurities, stripped of fluoride to low (10 ppm) levels, and concentrated to the desired P2 s Many variations of this basic scheme have been developed to improve the extraction of phosphate and rejection of impurities to the raffinate stream, and numerous patents have been granted on solvent extraction processes. [Pg.328]

Among the properties sought in the solvent are low cost, avadabihty, stabiUty, low volatiUty at ambient temperature, limited miscibility in aqueous systems present in the process, no solvent capacity for the salts, good solvent capacity for the acids, and sufficient difference in distribution coefficient of the two acids to permit their separation in the solvent-extraction operation. Practical solvents are C, C, and alcohols. For industrial process, alcohols are the best choice (see Amyl alcohols). Small quantities of potassium nitrate continue to be produced from natural sources, eg, the caUche deposits in Chile. [Pg.536]

Tantalum Compounds. Potassium heptafluorotantalate [16924-00-8] K TaF, is the most important tantalum compound produced at plant scale. This compound is used in large quantities for tantalum metal production. The fluorotantalate is prepared by adding potassium salts such as KCl and KF to the hot aqueous tantalum solution produced by the solvent extraction process. The mixture is then allowed to cool under strictiy controlled conditions to get a crystalline mass having a reproducible particle size distribution. To prevent the formation of oxyfluorides, it is necessary to start with reaction mixtures having an excess of about 5% HF on a wt/wt basis. The acid is added directiy to the reaction mixture or together with the aqueous solution of the potassium compound. Potassium heptafluorotantalate is produced either in a batch process where the quantity of output is about 300—500 kg K TaFy, or by a continuously operated process (28). [Pg.327]

Suitable organic solvents, such as ether, benzene, naphtha and the like, are more soluble than in water. This makes it possible to separate them from other substances which may accompany them in the water solution but which are not soluble in the solvents employed. Hence, one application of solvent extraction is the analytical determination of unsaponifiable oils and waxes in admixture with fatty material by submitting the mixture to vigorous saponification with alcoholic potash or, if necessary, sodium ethylate, and to dilute the product with water and extract with petroleum ether. The soaps remain in the aqueous solution while the unsaponifiable oils and waxes dissolved in the ether. The addition of a salt to an aqueous solution prior to extraction is sometimes practiced in some processes. In the classical process, after ruthenium and osmium have been removed, excess oxidants are removed by boiling, iridium is precipitated as (NH4)2lrCl6 and rhodium as [Rh(NH3)5Cl]Cl2.
