Capacitors as integrating elements are used successfully in a series of important modern spectrographs, the Applied Research Laboratories Quantometers (9.8). [Pg.59]

The continuous tin-plate thickness gage utilizing Method I (6.2) has a counterpart in the Applied Research Laboratories Quantrol,16 which makes the same measurement by Method II (modified) on electrolytic tin plate at the Kaiser Steel Company, Fontana, California, and elsewhere. [Pg.157]

It is sometimes convenient to use a properly chosen scattered line in the background for comparison to avoid having to add an internal standard to the sample.37 The experience of the Applied Research Laboratories shows that the effects of variations or fluctuations in the equipment and of particle size in powdered samples can be eliminated satisfactorily in this way. In some cases, absorption and enhancement effects are also adequately compensated. We have already mentioned (7.8) that scattered reference line and the analytical line will be subject to considerably different absorption effects if the two lines differ appreciably in wavelength. Everything depends upon the selection of a satisfactory scattered reference line, and this is done empirically. [Pg.191]

An important step undertaken especially to promote x-ray emission spectrography is the use of curved crystals in commercial instruments by the Applied Research Laboratories (4.10). [Pg.241]

The reader will appreciate that Figure 9-1 does not illustrate the alternative method of collecting information (2.6, 2.7) in which the output of a Geiger counter is used to charge a capacitor. This method has been put to good use by the Applied Research Laboratories (9.8). [Pg.242]

The Aluminum Company of America alone carries out some millions of determinations annually on its Applied Research Laboratories Quantometers, which are automated spectrographs for the visible and ultraviolet regions. It is not surprising that any method as successful as x-ray emission spectrography should be influenced by the trend toward automation. This trend is logically following two directions, as follows. [Pg.252]

The applied research laboratory has developed a new substance that they feel has great potential as a gasoline additive. It improves the antiknock characteristics of gasoline, and does not noticeably increase the amount of air pollution. The marketing department estimates that within 5 years the market could reach 10,000,000 lb / yr. The process engineer is asked to design a plant to produce 10,000,000 lb / yr (4,500,000 kg / yr). [Pg.11]

Six commercial narrow UWD polystyrene standards ( Applied Research Laboratories Limited, England ) and five broad MWD 2-polybuta-diene fractions were used to calibrate an ARL 950 GPG instrument with silica bead packed columns. The ARL polystyrene standards were also used to calibrate a number of homeMnade SEC column units packed with silica beads or styrene-divinylbenzena copolymer beads, Hie average molecular weights of these samples are listed in Table I. Tetrahydrofuran or toluene was used as eluents for these columns. [Pg.128]

In 1967 Liebl reported the development of the first imaging SIMS instrument based on the principle of focused ion beam scanning [24]. This instrument, the ion microprobe mass analyzer, was produced by Applied Research Laboratories (Fig. 4.5). It used an improved hollow cathode duoplasmatron [25] ion source that eliminated filaments used in earlier sources and allowed stable operation with reactive gases. The primary ion beam was mass analyzed for beam purity and focused in a two-lens column to a spot as small as 2 pm. The secondary ions were accelerated from the sample surface into a double focusing mass spectrometer of Mattauch-Herzog geometry. Both positive and negative secondary ions were de-... [Pg.161]
