Out of the 900 million tons of coal produced in the United States for domestic purposes in 1992, about 34 million tons were used for coking [10]. The overw helmmg majority of coal is consumed by the electric utilities. Nevertheless, in 1990, the United States steel industry required about 23 million tons of coke which was produced by the byproduct recovery slot oven [15] For a typical blast furnace, this translates to 0 5 tons of coke per ton of iron metal. [Pg.207]

The top and the bottom x-ray detector each contain a multiplier phototube coated with phosphor. This tube compares the intensity of the x-ray beam entering the detector with that of the light from the reference standard, a discharge lamp. The reference beam is part of a circuit that maintains the x-ray source at constant intensity. The deviation wedge comes to rest when the intensities of the transmitted x-ray beams stand in a predetermined ratio. At this point, the unbalance in the servo system has been compensated, and the position of the deviation wedge consequently indicates the thickness of the strip. In 1955, this application was made fully automatic that is, the unbalance (or error signal) just mentioned was used to readjust tandem cold reduction mills of the United States Steel Corporation. Automatic control proved significantly more effective than manual control. [Pg.69]

Clean Coke A process for making coke and chemicals from high-sulfur coals. Developed by the United States Steel Corporation with support from the U.S. Department of Energy. See also carbonization. [Pg.66]

CyAM [Cyanide ammonia] A process for reducing the cyanide concentration in the ammonia liquor from coke manufacture, so that the liquor may be fed to an activated sludge effluent treatment plant. Developed by the United States Steel Corporation and used by that company in two of its coking plants. [Pg.76]

H-Iron [Hydrogen iron] A process for making iron by reducing powdered iron oxides from ores or scrap, using hydrogen. A variation on the process will convert iron/titanium ores to a titanium concentrate and metallic iron. Developed by Hydrocarbon Research and United States Steel Corporation, and used in Pennsylvania and California. See also DR. [Pg.128]
