Application market estimates

The optical application market excluding optical waveguide uses was estimated at 14.6 million in the United States in 1994 (216). The annual U.S. consumption of fused quartz has been estimated at close to 45,000 metric tons. Prices ranged from 50 to 60/kg. 

The first involves an attempt to replace a competitive plastic in an established application. Market research and market development had reported that a nylon material was being used to make tubing for such items as automotive brake cables. The market was estimated to be several million pounds and concentrated in only a few companies who were making the cables and selling directly to the end user. 

The results of the above analysis for the market potential for each type of application are demonstrated in Table 6.1. These results are based on previous studies condcucted by Merten (1998), Tsoutsos et al. (2004) and Zoulias et al. (2006), but it must be noted that they represent a market estimation that was conducted without taking into account external factors such as policy measures, subsidies etc. 

The PHA-based biodegradable polymers market is still very much at the developmental stage with few commercial applications in existence. The aluminum containing compound having the largest woddwide market, estimated to be over 30 x 10 t in 1990, is metal grade alumina. Second, is aluminum hydroxide. In 1990 the market for Al(OH)3 should approach or exceed 3.5 million metric tons which is equivalent to 2.3 million tons on an alumina basis. The spHt between additive and feedstock applications for Al(OH)2 (16) is roughly 50 50. Additive applications include those as flame retardants (qv) in products such as carpets, and to enhance the properties of paper (qv), plastic, polymer, and mbber products. Significant quantities are also used in pharmaceuticals (qv), cosmetics (qv), adhesives (qv), polishes (qv), dentifrices (qv), and glass (qv). 

The world market for amino resins used in coatings in 1990 was estimated to be 200000-225000 t [2.163]. The U.S. market is about 50000 t, with the European market estimated to be of similar size. Biobutanol is also an attractive biofuel with superior fuel properties but this application has not yet been established in the market. Biobutanol fits the existing fuel infrastructure it has a higher energy density (similar to petrol/gasoline) and better performance than bioethanol. In addition, butanol can be dehydrated to 1-butene and catalyzed into longer-chain oligomers for jet-fuel applications. Biobutanol can substitute for both ethanol and biodiesel in the biofuel market estimated to be 247 billion by 2020 [177].

Marine applications are estimated to be the largest end-use category for polyesters, with the major use being in pleasure boats. This market has been experiencing percentage slippage due to the pleasure boat market... 

Electrical components were the most dominant application for automotive plastics as the segment accounted for 37% of total market volume in 2013. Electrical components were followed by interior and exterior fiomishings at 32.8% of total market volume in the same year. Power trains are expected to be the fastest growing application market for automotive plastics at an estimated CAGR of 10.4% from 2014 to 2020. 

Two suppliers to the U.S. market are Bayer and Nippon Zeon. The estimated volume used in the United States is 500 700 t/yr. Hydrogenated nitrile mbber (HSN or HNBR) compounds compete with EKM, EVMQ, ECO, ACM, and high ACN content nitrile mbbers. Big applications include automotive timing belts, blowout preventors, drill pipe protectors, and numerous oil and fuel pump components. 

Since the publication of the first edition of the Handbook of Chemical Vapor Deposition in early 1992, the technology has developed at a rapid rate and the number and scope of its applications and their impact of the market have increased considerably. The size of the CVD market today (1998) is estimated to be at least double that of the market six years ago. These factors led to the need to revise and expand the first edition of the Handbook.
