Industrial pumps

Pump performance curves are the least used, least consulted, least appreciated, and least understood aspect of the world of industrial pumps. The plant personnel who most need their pump curves, meehanics and operators, generally don t have the curves and accompanying information at their disposal. The people who control the performance curves store them in a file, in a drawer, in a cabinet that s almost never opened. They don t share the information contained in the curves with the people who need it. Maybe it s because they themselves don t understand the information to share it. In the next few paragraphs and pages, we re going to explain the pump performance curves. This might be the most important chapter of the book. 

Nitrile (Buna-N) is a rubber compound popular in most household plumbing applications. It s a basic plumbers o-ring seal, and handles most household liquids and chemicals. Because industry pumps so much water, this elastomer may be the single most popular o-ring seeondary seal in the world. Its service range is from -30° F to +250° F (-34° C. to +120 C). 

For most applications, the balanced, o-ring cartridge seal will adequately handle every pump, liquid, and condition in a modern industrial process plant. There are, however, some industrial pumping applications that will present problems to even the best of mechanical seals. Should one of these applications cause the seal to give less than desirable performance, the next step to take in extending the service life of the seal (and ultimately the pump) is to install some type of environmental control to protect and isolate the seal components from the fluid. Let s consider some difficult sealing applications. 

Very few industrial pumps come out of service and go into the maintenance shop because tlie volute casing or impeller split down the middle, or because the shaft fractured into four pieces, d he majority of pumps go into the shop because the bearings or the mechanical seal tailed. 

The simplest, and oldest, form of seal is the packed gland, or stuffing box, Figure 5.12. Its applications range from sealing the stems of the water taps in every home, to proving the seal on industrial pumps, agitator and valve shafts. 

Pumps are used for many purposes. Additional examples include gasoline pumps used to pump the gasoline from a holding tank into your car, water pumps to transfer drinking water from a reservoir to your house or business, and industrial pumps used to move industrial fluids such as chemicals or waste products from one tank to another inside a plant. A car also uses pumps to pump fuel from the gas tank to the engine and to pump coolant from the radiator to the engine block. 

To hear some women tell it, an industrial pump is to a home pump as a Lexus is to a skateboard. They say the milk flows effortlessly from your breast, the pump purrs quietly, and it is way faster. We know a number of women who fed their babies for as long as they wanted to with home or individual hand pumps, but industrial pumps are something you might also consider if you re not the only one with a newborn at home.

It is common for industrial pumping and processing equipment to use shear rates that fall in the intermediate shear regime from about 10 to 1000 s 1 as illustrated in Table I. Automobile applications of PBT include window and door hardware, speedometer frames and gears, servo pistons, and automobile ignition system components (distributor caps, coil bobbins, and rotors). In addition, it is used as bases, handles, and housings for small appliances (toasters, cookers, fryers and irons) as well as small industrial pump housing, impellers, and support brackets, gears, showerhead and faucet components, and consumer products like buckles, clips, buttons, and zippers. 

Twenty years ago, the chemical processing industry pumped a tremendous amount of water out of the ground for industrial applications. This practice was stopped after it was discovered that as the water table dropped, so did the surrounding countryside. The CPI now uses surface water for most industrial applications. Surface water s defined as water that is drawn in for industrial applications from lakes, rivers, and oceans. 

Poly(phenylenesulfides) are used where resistance to heat and chemicals is required, for example in the chemical process industry (pump housings, impellers, valves, metering devices, tanks, coil bobbins) [13]. 

A lot of prototypes were created in this laboratory, e.g., modem oxygen sensors, widely used in the industry, pumps for extra-pure oxygen and so-called mountain air (air depleted with oxygen) production, and, most importantly, his latest brainchild, various solid oxide fuel cell battery prototypes from 100 to 700 W.
