Thermoplastic road-marking materials These require special application apparatus. Although they are thicker and last longer than the road paints their tendency to discolor may cancel this advantage. [Pg.133]

Similar to screen printing, the spray coating method [95] is widely used for catalyst fabrication, especially in labs. The major difference between the two is that the viscosity of the ink for spray coating is much lower than that for screen printing. The application apparatus can be a manual spray gun or an auto-spraying system with programmed X-Y axes, movable robotic arm, an ink reservoir and supply loop, ink atomization, and a spray nozzle with adjustable flux and pressure. The catalyst ink can be coated on the gas diffusion layer or cast directly on the membrane. To prevent distortion and swelling of the membrane, either it is converted into Na+ form or a vacuum table is used to fix the membrane. The catalyst layer is dried in situ or put into an oven to remove the solvent. [Pg.85]

Art. 8 1. With a view to protecting bees and other pollinating insects, treatments involving insecticides and acaricides are forbidden, whatever the product and application apparatus used, on all crops and forestry plantations visited by these insects during flowering and during the honeydew production period following attacks from aphids. [Pg.45]

The paper discusses the application of dynamic indentation method and apparatus for the evaluation of viscoelastic properties of polymeric materials. The three-element model of viscoelastic material has been used to calculate the rigidity and the viscosity. Using a measurements of the indentation as a function of a current velocity change on impact with the material under test, the contact force and the displacement diagrams as a function of time are plotted. Experimental results of the testing of polyvinyl chloride cable coating by dynamic indentation method and data of the static tensile test are presented. [Pg.239]

The apparatuses working on the TCMC prineiple can find the application in thickness measuring, tomography and other areas of the NDT. [Pg.431]

In essence, a guided-ion beam is a double mass spectrometer. Figure A3.5.9 shows a schematic diagram of a griided-ion beam apparatus [104]. Ions are created and extracted from an ion source. Many types of source have been used and the choice depends upon the application. Combining a flow tube such as that described in this chapter has proven to be versatile and it ensures the ions are thennalized [105]. After extraction, the ions are mass selected. Many types of mass spectrometer can be used a Wien ExB filter is shown. The ions are then injected into an octopole ion trap. The octopole consists of eight parallel rods arranged on a circle. An RF... [Pg.811]

The apparatus consists of a tip-position controller, an electrochemical cell with tip, substrate, counter and reference electrodes, a bipotentiostat and a data-acquisition system. The microelectrode tip is held on a piezoelectric pusher, which is mounted on an inchwomi-translator-driven x-y-z tliree-axis stage. This assembly enables the positioning of the tip electrode above the substrate by movement of the inchwomi translator or by application of a high voltage to the pusher via an amplifier. The substrate is attached to the bottom of the electrochemical cell, which is mounted on a vibration-free table [, and ]. A number... [Pg.1941]

The example above of tire stopped-flow apparatus demonstrates some of tire requirements important for all fonns of transient spectroscopy. These are tire ability to provide a perturbation (pump) to tire physicochemical system under study on a time scale tliat is as fast or faster tlian tire time evolution of tire process to be studied, the ability to synclironize application of tire pump and tire probe on tliis time scale and tire ability of tire detection system to time resolve tire changes of interest. [Pg.2950]

Experimental techniques based on the application of mechanical forces to single molecules in small assemblies have been applied to study the binding properties of biomolecules and their response to external mechanical manipulations. Among such techniques are atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical tweezers, biomembrane force probe, and surface force apparatus experiments (Binning et al., 1986 Block and Svoboda, 1994 Evans et ah, 1995 Israelachvili, 1992). These techniques have inspired us and others (see also the chapters by Eichinger et al. and by Hermans et al. in this volume) to adopt a similar approach for the study of biomolecules by means of computer simulations. [Pg.40]

Distillation. This process is carried out in the apparatus shown in Figs. 36, 37 and 38. The distillation apparatus (Fig. 36) is of very general application and is made in one piece. [Pg.63]

First, considerably greater emphasis has been placed on semimicro techniques and their application to preparations, separations, analysis and physical determinations such as those of molecular weight. We have therefore greatly expanded the section on Manipulation on a semi-micro scale which was in the Third Edition, and we have described many more preparations on this scale, some independent and others as alternatives to the larger-scale preparations which immediately precede them. Some 40 separate preparations on the semi-micro scale are described in detail, in addition to specific directions for the preparation of many classes of crystalline derivatives required for identification purposes. The equipment required for these small-scale reactions has been selected on a realistic basis, and care has been taken not to include the very curious pieces of apparatus sometimes suggested as necessary for working on the semi-micro scale. [Pg.585]

The high-pressure water supply service is employed for the operation of the ordinary filter pump, which finds so many applications in the laboratory. A typical all metal filter pump is illustrated in Fig. 11, 21, 1. It is an advantage to have a non-return valve fitted in the side arm to prevent sucking back if the water is turned off or if the water pressure is suddenly reduced. Theoretically, an efficient filter pump should reduce the pressure in a system to a value equal to the vapour pressure of the water at the temperature of the water of the supply mains. In practice this pressure is rarely attained (it is usually 4 10 mm. higher) because of the leakage of air into the apparatus and the higher temperature of the laboratory. The vapour pressures of water at 5°, 10°, 15°, 20° and 25° are respectively 6-5, 9-2,12-8, 17 5 and 23 8 mm. respectively. It is evident that the vacuum obtained with a water pump will vary considerably with the temperature of the water and therefore with the season of the year in any case a really good vacuum cannot be produced by a filter pump. [Pg.110]

P -f lOROH -f 5Br, — 2H3PO, -f lORBr -f 2H,0 The reaction is of general application with primary alcohols (n propyl to n hexadecyl) the yields are over 90 per cent, of the theoretical, but with secondary alcohols the yields are 50-80 per cent. in the latter case a small quantity of high boiling point by-product is also formed which can, however, be readily removed by fractional distillation. The reaction is conveniently carried out in a special all glass apparatus. [Pg.271]

The reaction is of general application the yields of primary alcohols approach the theoretical values, and for secondary alcohols are 85-95 per cent. The process is best carried out with the aid of a special apparatus. [Pg.271]

Ethylene. Under the influence of pressure and a catalyst, ethylene yields a white, tough but flexible waxy sohd, known as Polythene. Polyethylene possesses excellent electric insulation properties and high water resistance it has a low specific gravity and a low softening point (about 110°). The chemical inertness oi Polythene has found application in the manufacture of many items of apparatus for the laboratory. It is a useful lubricant for ground glass connexions, particularly at relatively high temperatures. [Pg.1015]

The complexity of the apparatus needed for ion implantation makes this method of case hardening of limited application. Further, the case depth is considerably lower than that produced by carburizing or nitriding. The depth of implantation of nitrogen in a steel is about 0.00006 cm (19), ie, so thin that it is difficult to measure the hardness profile by conventional microhardness measurements. [Pg.216]

Patent laws provide for several stages in the life of an application for a patent on an invention. The pattern followed by patent laws in effect in most industrialized countries during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and still in effect in the United States in 1995, calls for the examination of all patent appHcations to certify that the claimed invention meets the national standards for novelty, usehilness, and inventiveness. The owner of the technology to be patented files appHcation papers that include a specification containing a description of the invention to be patented (called the disclosure) and claims defining the limits of the invention to be protected by the patent, a formal request for the issuance of a patent, and fees. Drawings of devices and apparatuses, electrical circuits, flow charts, etc, are an important part of the disclosures of most nonchemical and many chemical patents. [Pg.43]

Apparatus for testing materials for heat-transfer applications is shown in Fig. 28-4. Here the sample is at a higher temperature than the bulk solution. [Pg.2426]
