Dynamically formed membranes were pursued for many years for reverse osmosis because of their high water fluxes and relatively good salt rejection, especially with brackish water feeds. However, the membranes proved to be unstable and difficult to reproduce reliably and consistently. For these reasons, and because high-performance interfacial composite membranes were developed in the meantime, dynamically formed reverse osmosis membranes fell out of favor. A small application niche in high-temperature nanofiltration and ultrafiltration remains, and Rhone Poulenc continues their production. The principal application is poly(vinyl alcohol) recovery from hot wash water produced in textile dyeing operations. [Pg.125]

The resistance of the polymer to oils and organic solvents can be directly attributed to the hydroxyl functionality and the film-forming properties of the polymer. Treated paper substrates display a significant amount of oil resistance, which make them valuable for packing papers and food-grade paperboard containers. This performance improvement is achieved despite the fact that the 1—3 wt % add-on level, typical of size press applications, is too low to provide a continuous poly (vinyl alcohol) film. [Pg.489]

The protection of electronic devices has been a key application for specialty silicones, and this application continues to keep pace with the rate of device development (5). Silicones are used in various ways, ranging from resinous circuit board coatings to encapsulants, with the silicone gels representing a unique solution to a diflScult problem, stress relief These dielectric gels are prepared by hydrosilation and are lightly cross-linked poly(dimethylsiloxane)s. Their modulus is extremely low, but they are elastic in their behavior. They have the stress-relief characteristic of a liquid but the nonflow property of an elastomer. These jellylike materials maintain their physical profile over the broad temperature range of-80 to 200 °C. [Pg.759]

The asymmetric epoxidation of functionalized alkenes still attracts considerable attention. Synthetic chemists continue to be in search of new and improved routes to epoxides, since they provide versatile intermediates for natural product synthesis. The topic of preparative techniques for chiral epoxides is seldom broached without the mention of the Sharpless epoxidation. Indeed, the impact of this protocol cannot be overestimated, as new applications continue to be reported. For example, linear poly(tartrate ester) ligands have been used this past year to generate a solid-supported Sharpless-type catalyst <97CC123>. [Pg.49]

The use of poly(vinyl chloride) in outdoor applications continues to grow. Much effort has gone into elucidating the mechanism of photodecomposition of poly(vinyl chloride), but many questions are still outstanding. While the realistic state of the polymer for laboratory studies is in the form of films, several reports have appeared describing investigations of photodegradation of dilute solutions of the polymer and under such conditions participation of the solvent must be seriously considered. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) has good heat resistance and may be used continuously at temperatures up to 150°C. The polymer may be melt processed by the standard techniques of injection moulding and extrusion. The polymer has very good weather resistance. Potential applications for poly (vinylidene fluoride) are in chemical and food-processing plant, packaging film, laminates and wire covering. [Pg.144]

Industrial equipment is a continuing area of development for plastics. Pipes, pumps, valves and sight glasses, made from such materials as PVC, PTFE and poly-4-methylpent-l-ene, have become well established on account of their corrosion resistance. The nylons are used for such diverse applications as mine conveyor belts and main drive gears for knitting machines and paper-making equipment. These and other materials are widely used where such features as toughness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, non-stick properties, electrical insulation capability and transparency are of importance. [Pg.14]

The mutual chemistry of plastic containers and food products must be considered for any proposed application. There is continuous physical and chemical activity at the interface between the food product and the container. The type and extent of this activity determines whether or not the plastic container can successfully hold and protect the food product. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American public are increasingly suspicious of all plastics, particularly the halo-genated compounds. The recent ban (April 1973) on poly(vinyl chloride)... [Pg.56]

Choice of the methods is based on a critical review (117 refs) of the usual methods of water detn by chemical and physical methods. A theoretical and exptl analysis of the new methods was made and their results compared with those of older methods. Application to mono-, di-, and tribasic and to double-base NC and poly (vinyl nitrate) propints is discussed... [Pg.945]

Van Koten and Frey used a hyperbranched poly(triallylsilane) as the support for palladium- pincer complexes.[63] The supported palladium-pincer complexes were applied in the catalytic aldol condensation of benzaldehyde and methyl isocyanate. Their activity was similar to that of single site Pd catalysts. According to the authors, the complex is suitable for continuous membrane applications, as demonstrated by their purification by means of dialysis. [Pg.101]

Flow injection methodologies are highly suitable for implementing CL analyses using low-pressure continuous mixing. There are many reported applications of this type including immobilized reactants [13] or enzymes [14], One recent example is the flow injection manifold used for the determination of poly-... [Pg.180]

These dyes have affinity for one or, usually, more types of hydrophobic fibre and they are normally applied by exhaustion from fine aqueous dispersion. Although pure disperse dyes have extremely low solubility in cold water, such dyes nevertheless do dissolve to a limited extent in aqueous surfactant solutions at typical dyeing temperatures. The fibre is believed to sorb dye from this dilute aqueous solution phase, which is continuously replenished by rapid dissolution of particles from suspension. Alternatively, hydrophobic fibres can absorb disperse dyes from the vapour phase. This mechanism is the basis of many continuous dyeing and printing methods of application of these dyes. The requirements and limitations of disperse dyes on cellulose acetate, triacetate, polyester, nylon and other synthetic fibres will be discussed more fully in Chapter 3. Similar products have been employed in the surface coloration of certain thermoplastics, including cellulose acetate, poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene. [Pg.23]
