Fluid Specifications. The performance characteristics of all antifreeze solutions are governed by fluid specifications, that have been developed over the years by industry standards committees, such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Additionally, most engine and/or cooling system manufacturers have thek own compositional specifications to which the fluids must conform. [Pg.190]

Approximately 5% of the U.S. consumption of is in agriculture. Boron is a necessary trace nutrient for plants and is added in small quantities to a number of fertilizers. Borates are also used in crop sprays for fast rehef of boron deficiency. Borates, when apphed at relatively high concentration, act as nonselective herbicides. Small quantities of borates are used in the manufacture of alloys and refractories (qv). Molten borates readily dissolve other metal oxides usage as a flux in metallurgy is an important apphcation. Other important small volume apphcations for borates are in fire retardants for both plastics and ceUulosic materials, in hydrocarbon fuels for fungus control, and in automotive antifreeze for corrosion control (see Corrosion and corrosion inhibitors). Borates are used as neutron absorbers in nuclear reactors. Several borates, which are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can be used for insecticidal purposes, eg, TIM-BOR. [Pg.205]

In automotive and aerospace end uses, the apphcations ate also often electrical. Polysulfones do not have as good solvent resistance as poly(phenylene sulfide). They perform well in hydrocarbons like gasoline and oil, or in antifreeze, but ate attacked by the alcohol-blend fuel mixtures. This may limit their under-the-hood apphcations. [Pg.272]

Ethanol has been used in the United States to a considerable extent as an antifreeze but it has largely been replaced for such use by ethylene glycol. The use of fermentation alcohol in automotive fuel has been discussed above. Several tropical countries consider ethanol, produced from regenerable resources, an attractive petrochemical feedstock. [Pg.414]

Ethylene glycol is common in automotive antifreeze mixtures. Because of its toxicity, it is sometimes replaced by propylene glycol, which is FDA approved for use in food, and is considered generally accepted as safe. Ethylene glycol has a sweet taste, and accidental poisoning in children is a danger. [Pg.43]

End uses. Its a little curious that the two major end uses for EG are so different. One is -a consumer product the other is a feedstock for more complicated chemistry. The reasons have to do with two separate properties of EG, one physical property, one chemical property. Because of EG s low freezing point, it is the main ingredient in automotive antifreeze. Because it is so chemically reactive, it is used as a monomer in making polyester polymers and PET, the plastic in the ubiquitous water and drink bottles. [Pg.153]

Uses. Polyester resins use up about 60% of the propylene glycol (and most of the dipropylene glycol) manufactured. The remainder is used as a tobacco and cosmetic humectant. (a chemical that keeps moisture around), automotive antifreeze and brake fluid ingredients, food additive, and plasticizers for various resins, and making nonionic detergents and coatings. Propylene glycol is an excellent solvent. [Pg.165]

Antifreeze. Any compound or mixture that lowers the freeing point of water can be referred to as antifreeze. The preponderant, commercial antifreeze is ethylene glycol diluted with water. Other organic compounds used occasionally are methanol, ethanol, and propylene glycol. The primary application is to protect automotive cooling systems from freezing. [Pg.391]

An antidote has been found for ethylene glycol poisonings, but it is too costly for most hospitals. Ethylene glycol is a main ingredient in automotive antifreeze and other products. Every year, at least 6,000 people fall victim to ethylene glycol poisoning, which can lead to permanent disability or death unless it is treated immediately. Traditional treatment is complicated and tricky, but the new drug fomepizole (Antizol Orphan Medical, Inc.) has been found to be a proven antidote (Leary, 1999). [Pg.219]
