In addition to the toxic effects indicated for propranolol, acebutolol may produce hair loss and elevate antinuclear antibody titers (32). 

For the pathogenesis of multiple sklerosis, autoimmune T-lymphocy tes play a predominant role, which are directed against components of the neural myelin sheath. T-lymphocy tes by secreting cytokines such as interferon y maintain the chronic inflammation which destructs the myelin sheath. Also cytotoxic T-lymphocytes may participate directly. The cause of multiple sklerosis is unknown. Significantly increased antibody titers against several vitusses, mostly the measles virus, point to a (latent) virus infection initiating the disease.

Artificially acquired immunity against some diseases may require periodic booster injections to keep an adequate antibody level (or antibody titer) circulating in the blood. A booster injection is the administration of an additional dose of die vaccine to boost the production of antibodies to a level diat will maintain die desired immunity. The booster is given months or years after die initial vaccine and may be needed because die life of some antibodies is short. 

Essentially any vertebrate can be used as a source of antibodies. Rabbits are easy to care for, and produce a moderate amount of serum, often with high antibody titers. 

In the dialyzed batch start-up phase and the subsequent continuous operation a substantial increase in viable cell density and monoclonal antibody (MAb) titer was observed compared to a conventional suspension culture. The raw data, profiles of the viable cell density, viability and monoclonal antibody titer during the batch start-up and the continuous operation with a dialysis flow rate of 5 L/d are shown in Figures 17.6 and 17.7. Children less than 12 years of age will have a 97% seroconversion rate following a single vaccination. Adolescents and adults more than 13 years old will only have 78% seroconversion after a single inoculation, but will have 99% conversion after the second vaccination administered 4 to 8 weeks after the first. These results show that the covalently crosslinked Adjuvax formulations were superior to the physically entrapped Adjuvax formulations. In addition, the Adjuvax crosslinked formulations were as effective in stimulating antibody titers as Freund s Adjuvant. Furthermore, animals immunized with Adjuvax did not experience local inflammatory reactions or granuloma formation which was observed with all CFA/IFA immunized animals.
