Progress in research

Progress in research and development in the wood-based industry and in the adhesive industry has shown many successes during the last decades. On the other hand, many industrial requirements still require considerable and important developments in this area. The main driving forces today are cheaper , quicker and more complex . The first two are caused by the heightened competition in the above-mentioned industries and the attempt to minimize costs while maintaining a certain level of product quality and performance. The key word more complex stands for new and specialized products and processes. Adhesives play a central role in wood-based panel production. The quality of bonding, and hence the properties of the wood-based panels, are determined mainly by the type and quality of the adhesive. Development in wood-based panels, therefore, is always linked to development in adhesives and resins. 

The goal of this book is thus to assess progress in the field, to identify fruitful new research directions, to summarize the substantial progress that has thus far been made with theoretical studies, and to clarify some unusual features of carbon-based materials that are relevant to the interpretation of experiments on carbon nanotubes that are now being so actively pursued. A second goal of this book is thus to stimulate further progress in research on carbon nanotubes and related materials.

From the structural studies given in this article, it is evident that the charge density study by the MEM/Rietveld method using SR powder diffraction data is powerful for determination of the endohedral nature of metallofullerenes. There is no doubt the structural information provided greatly contributes to progress in research of endofullerenes as well as endofullerene peapod, which is the met-allofullerene-encapsulating carbon nanotube. 

Nevertheless, the discovery that high electronic conductance could be induced in organic polymers is a most important event in electro-organic chemistry, and progress in research to develop the electrochemistry of such compounds (which began in the 1980s) is still far from reaching the exponential part of its S-shaped plot. 

The supply of living cestode material for in vitro and in vivo experiments presents a major barrier to progress in research. Oligonucleotide-directed site-specific mutagenesis is a powerful technique for the study of proteins and has brought about great progress in research on the structure and function of proteins. This technique makes it possible in theory to obtain any mutant enzyme desired. One of the goals of such protein engineering is to make the proteins more stable.
