In the field of furocoumarins, which includes a large number of compounds extracted from the Umbelliferae, the nomenclature is rather uncertain. Up to 1968, those compounds were looked upon (Chemical Abstracts) as S-lactones of Bz-o-hydroxybenzofurylacrylic acids more recently, as furochromenic derivatives.10 Some of those compounds have names related to their geographical or botanical origin, such as sachalinin (7), recently extracted from the roots of Angelica sachalinensis 11 it is then advisable to add the chemical name. 

In California, fortified sweet wines of light color, such as angelica and white port, may be used as a base wine for making sweet vermouth. The desired sugar content is obtained, as necessary, by the addition of grape concentrate or sucrose. The amount of water added as a result may not exceed 10% by volume of the vermouth. Citric acid may be added to adjust total acidity. The alcohol content must be sufficiently high to adjust for dilution when extracts low in alcohol are employed for flavoring. 

Brandy or alcohol extracts of spices and herbs may be used for flavoring vermouth (Rizzo, 1957). Spices like anola, and ginger are known to possess medicinal properties, as well as antimicrobial activities (Joshi and John, 2002). The precise details of extraction differ among manufactures. The more important botanical constituents include coriander, cloves, chamomile, dittany of Crete, orris, and quassia. Additional flavorant may include allspice, angelica, anise, bitter almond, cinchona, coriander, juniper, nutmeg, orange peel, and rhubarb. 

Several fatty acids and derivatives were isolated from the dichloromethane extract of Angelica pubescens Maxim f. biserrata Shan et Yuan (Umbelliferae) by following in vitro 5-LOX and COX-1 inhibitory assays. Hydroxymethylfurfural is not volatile by steam. It is prepared from hexoses in the presence of an acid catalyst by short heat treatment to avoid further degradation to levulinic acid. After recovery by solvent extraction hydroxymethylfurfural is purified by distillation. Levulinic acid can be prepared in good yield from hexose-based polysaccharides by heating with acids. In this reaction formic acid is liberated and levulinic acid is easily lactonized to form a- and /3-angelica lactones (Fig. 2-31).

II. Oral Toxicity Test of Korea Angelica Root Extract... 

Ferulic acid, (I), is obtained from the Korean angelica root by extraction. When administered to mice in the current investigation, a considerable improvement in memory retention was observed. This effect has also been reported by Castillo (3). Isoferulic acid, (II), was ineffective in treating dementia.
