The work described in this paper was primarily supported by grants GM Ill ll from the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences, N00014-80-K-0178 from the Office of Naval Research, and the Marine Science Institute, Quezon City, Philippines. Support was also provided by grants AM 2674 (J.R.), The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (D.R.H. and S.R.W.), GM 34913 (W.R.G.), the International Foundation for Science, Stockholm, Sweden (LJ.C.), and the National Research Council of the Philippines (L J. In conclusion it is a pleasure to thank Mr. Amquist for his assistance in taking readings, the California Institute of Technology for the facilities extended for the work, and the National Research Council for its support which made the work possible. [Pg.5]

Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration. This project will demonstrate the third generation Ford fuel cell Focus. Five vehicles will operate in Vancouver, beginning in 2004. The project is managed by Fuel Cells Canada and funded by Natural Resources Canada, the government of British Columbia and the National Research Council. Results ofthe demonstration project will be used to influence future technology development. The budget is C 5.8 million over three years. [Pg.119]

Scientific inquiry demands a number of skills. The National Committee on Science Education Standards and Assessment and the National Research Council, in addition to other organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, have stressed the training and development of these skills. Science students must learn how to raise important questions, design the tools or experiments necessary to answer these questions, apply models in explaining the results and revise the model as needed, be alert to alternative explanations, and construct and analyze arguments for and against competing models. [Pg.225]

Other Work. In addition to the work conducted by Shell Canada Limited, a number of studies with similar materials have been conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute (29), the U.S. Bureau of Mines (30) and the National Research Council of Canada, Dept, of Building Research (31.). [Pg.241]

Inadequate diets, with too few fruits and vegetables, are a cancer risk, and they are common. Fully 80 percent of children and adolescents26 and 68 percent of adults27 do not eat the five servings of fruits and vegetables per day recommended by the National Cancer Institute and the National Research Council. Publicity about hundreds of minor hypothetical risks, such as pesticide residues, can cause a loss of perspective about what is important. In a survey, half the U.S. public did not name fruit and vegetable consumption as protective against cancer.28... [Pg.144]

Received August 1,1975. Work supported by Trent University and the National Research Council of Canada. [Pg.345]

ACS MONOGRAPH Series was started by arrangement with the interallied Conference of Pure and Applied Chemistry, which met in London and Brussels in July 1919, when the American Chemical Society undertook the production and publication of Scientific and Technological Monographs on chemical subjects. At the same time it was agreed that the National Research Council, in cooperation with the American Chemical Society and the American Physical Society, should undertake the production and publication of Critical Tables of Chemical and Physical Constants. The American Chemical Society and the National Research Council mutually agreed to care for these two fields of chemical progress... [Pg.1298]

The authors gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada and the National Research Council of Canada. Spectra were kindly recorded by H. J. Koch, R. Simoneau, and M. Mazurek. [Pg.57]

An ACS member since 1973, Reichmanis is also a member of the American Physical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Materials Research Society, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Society of Women Engineers. She recently chaired the ACS Committee on Science and is an associate editor of the ACS journal Chemistry of Materials. She serves on the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the National Research Council Panel for Materials and Science Engineering. [Pg.125]

We would like to thank the United States Office of Naval Research (Physiology Program Grant No. N00014-77-G-0075) for supporting NRVN and the National Research Council of Canada for the provision of sabbatical leave for SRG. [Pg.61]

I am excited to be here to discuss science and technology with you. Science and technology have transformed the face of everyday life in the United States. As important as these fields are to the world today, their value will only increase in the new millennium. That is why the work of the Chemical Sciences Roundtable and the National Research Council is so important and why I am happy to join you today. [Pg.94]

Before submitting information to the Committee on Food Chemicals Codex, please read carefully the following paragraphs about the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) Amendments of 1997, section 15, public law number 105-153. This act creates certain new requirements regarding studies performed for federal government agencies by the National Academies the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the National Research Council (NRC) (collectively referred to as the National Academies ). [Pg.1016]

To bolster the FDA s ability to evaluate the safety of dietary supplements, a 2004 report ( Framework for Evaluating the Safety of the Dietary Supplements ) from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council of the (US) National Academies outlines a science-based process for assessing supplement ingredients, even when data about a substance s safety in humans is scarce. This approach to safety evaluation works within the regulatory parameters set by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which does not require manufacturers to provide safety data on their products. The report stated that supplement makers, the public, and others need to increase their reporting... [Pg.843]
