An Informal Survey

In summer 2008,1 conducted an informal survey in several countries of how the CBD had been implemented in that particular country and what the responders (typically friends and former colleagues) considered was its impact in their country. The questions that were asked were as follows  

Do you have regulations in place to cover the access to, and collection of, biological materials in your country  

In what year were those regulations approved and introduced  

Are plants, microbes and animal species all covered Is any organism excluded  

What is the name of the organisation (ministry, department, etc) which is responsible for overseeing aspects of the implementation of the CBD in your country

An informal survey revealed that in the near future as many as 22 Cone Calorimeters will be installed in 10 European countries and 15 Romm/Corner Test facilities will be available in 8 countries.

The method of NMR imaging was introduced by Lauterbur [ 15] in 1973 under the name zeugmatography. In subsequent years the spectacular progress of its application to anatomical imaging in medicine has made popular the name NMR tomography or NMR spin mapping [16,18]. A researcher in soil mechanics over many years might gloomily consider what if anything of the research output of the past half century has been reckoned sufficiently important to have been universally absorbed into the undergraduate curriculum. An optimistic view that critical state soil mechanics could be a candidate for this accolade has to be rapidly discarded as soon as one conducts an informal survey of text books or syllabi. Fees of some sort are also widespread in the education sector, even for primary-level education. Fees may be official or unofficial and may cover tuition, textbooks, compulsory uniforms, community contributions for teachers salaries (in Sub-Saharan Africa) and membership in parent-teacher associations (often used to enhance teachers meager salaries), and/or other school-based activities. An informal survey of 79 World Bank client countries shows that fees of some sort were levied for public primary schools in all but 2 of the countries (Algeria and Uruguay) surveyed (Kattan and Burnett 2004). ...

These subjects have been reviewed up the year 1975 in various works. Prij s Card Index (363) of thiazole compounds provides swift access to information on individual compounds. Syntheses of thiazoles have been carefully reviewed by Wiley etal. (361), and in 1957 the subject was dealt with in an excellent survey by Sprague and Land (448). 

Vessel Codes Other Than ASME Different design and construction rules are used in other countries. Chemical engineers concerned with pressure vessels outside the United States must become familiar with local pressure-vessel laws and regulations. Boilers and Pressure Vessels, an international survey of design and approval requirements published by the British Standards Institution, May-lands Avenue, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, in 1975, gives pertinent information for 76 political jurisdic tions. 

Titles of potential resourees were obtained by eonducting a literature search and an industry survey. Simultaneous literature searches were condueted by CCPS and SAIC. CCPS eoneentrated on obtaining CPI data resources while SAIC used a literature search conducted for the nuclear power reliability eommunity. These literature searches used in-house eompany, engineering, and public libraries and recommendations from members of the user eommunity. At the same time, a questionnaire was sent to professionals who eonduct CPQRAs. The survey requested information on the data resourees used by the companies and whether they had plant-speeific data that could be used by CCPS. Members of the CCPS Equipment Reliability Data Subcommittee were also asked to eompile lists of data resources with which they were familiar and which they had used for reliability or risk analyses. As a result, an extensive but not necessarily eomplete list of data resource titles was assembled. Any resources uncovered after the publisher s eutoff date and not reviewed have been included in Appendix D. 

This field by its nature draws from several distinct traditional disciplines. These publishing activities are supported by an Information Centre which maintains and develops the world s most comprehensive database of commercial and technical information on rubbers and plastics. 

The primary sources of information for this study are documented research results published in the countries investigated, accompanied by investigations to clarify the country specific policy background and including expert assessment. The methodology of an expert survey has been chosen for data collection. The expert survey conducted in 18 European countries (all EU-member states, plus Norway, Switzerland and the Czech Republic) uses a questiormaire that consists of two types of questions questions that are to be answered on the basis of literature reviews and expert knowledge, and those based on additional surveys that are to be performed by national experts. 

A recently published book provides an excellent survey of issues that relate to contamination with endotoxins (present in both viable and nonviable bacteria), their released cell wall constituents, and also viable bacteria in the pharmaceutical industry [1]. It is important to know both the content of the work environment (e.g., indoor air) and the pharmaceutical products themselves. The former provides information on possible sources of microbial contamination and the latter the purity of the final commercial product (or precursors in various stages in its preparation). In some cases it is vital to know the actual bacterial species involved in contamination culture-based methods are standard microbiological techniques which were the focus of Jimenez [1] and thus will not be discussed further. Any contamination (e.g., with endotoxins), regardless of the species of origin, is of utmost of importance (e.g., in determining the safety of a batch of antibiotics to be administered intravenously). This is determined optimally by non-culture-based methods. 

Recent surveys have shown that more than one-fourth (29%) of United States consumers rely primarily on themselves to ensure the food they eat is safe (1). Surprisingly, consumers reliance was higher on manufacturers than government, with scores of 23% and 20%, respectively this is a dramatic change compared to 1988, when three times as many consumers relied on the government as on industry. Therefore, continuous information to consumers, particularly by health authorities, on the purpose of various food animal production practices and each person s responsibility in ensuring food safety is essential to create an informed public and to contribute further to public confidence.
