An informal survey of 79 World Bank client countries shows that fees of some sort were levied for public primary schools in all but 2 of the countries (Algeria and Uruguay) surveyed (Kattan and Burnett 2004). ... [Pg.325]

The types of fees charged vary considerably from region to region. Where children are known to live nearby, it is often useful to arrange with teachers at local schools to show one of several films available on dangers of building sites. At the teacher s association, saw the Symonds. Felton Clarkjoked with us outside to the effect that the Association was called a Negro association, but that the entire day had been taken up by calling upon second rate white superintendents to speak. At the invitation of Miss Fannie Williams, I addressed the Parent-Teachers Association briefly on the subject of my Aaron Douglas quilt. [Pg.106]

It has now been well established that expectancies play a central role in the production of placebo effects.21 People s expectations of relief are not only correlated with how much benefit they report, but also with changes in the brain activity associated with the therapeutic benefit. These expectancies are formed and altered in many different ways. Our beliefs are influenced by parents, teachers, friends and colleagues, the advertisements we see on television and in newspapers and magazines, news programmes... [Pg.139]

Additionally, stimulant-associated improvements in social interactions positively influence the social behavior of others in the child s environment (Cunningham et ah, 1991 Whalen and Henker, 1992). Parents, teachers, siblings, and peers are more positive toward and less critical of the treated child with ADHD. Thus, when social impairments are associated with ADHD symptoms, pharmacotherapy may be a useful treatment modality. [Pg.451]

Parents will need to be heard, so a school website for comments or a drop box or voice mail box of information that allows communication to the school regarding the changes would be helpful. Surveys can be conducted before the policy change to allow parent input. Asking the parent teacher organization/ association to discuss the additions of security guards in their groups would also be helpful for buy-in. [Pg.395]

In common law there are long-established and important requirements for those acting in loco parentis which forms the basis for the duty of care. In loco parentis is used to describe the responsibility of a teacher towards the pupil and literally means in the place of the parent (Croner, 1992, pp. 3-261).
