Methods have been developed for analysis or deterrnination of free amino acids in blood, food, and feedstocks (116). In proteins, the first step is hydrolysis, then separation if necessary, and finally, analysis of the amino acid mixture. [Pg.284]

The automated amino acid analy2er depends on ion-exchange chromatography (117) and is now a routine tool for the analysis of amino acid mixtures (118). As the name implies, the odor of urine in maple syrup urine disease (brancbed-chain ketonuria) suggests maple symp or burnt sugar. The biochemical defect involves the a-keto acid decarboxylase complex (reaction 2, Figure 30-19). Plasma and urinary levels of leucine, isoleucine, valine, a-keto acids, and a-hydroxy acids (reduced a-keto acids) are elevated. The mechanism of toxicity is unknown. Early diagnosis, especially prior to 1 week of age, employs enzymatic analysis. Prompt replacement of dietary protein by an amino acid mixture that lacks leucine, isoleucine, and valine averts brain damage and early mortality. [Pg.259]

There are a few substances that can reduce serotonin, norepinephrine and/or dopamine rapidly and substantially, reducing them to levels thought to be lower than those of depressed patients.23 That is what reserpine was supposed to do and, as we have seen, it did not cause depression - despite the early clinical impression that it did. Other substances have been used in later studies, the most common of which are amino-acid mixtures that lack the essential amino acids needed by the body to produce these neurotransmitters. For example, having people drink a beverage that is rich in amino acids, but does not contain tryptophan (the amino acid needed to produce serotonin), lowers their serotonin levels within a couple of hours. [Pg.91]
