Aging population

As of the mid-1990s, the market for bradyarrhythmia devices is hiUy penetrated in Western countries. Some growth is expected to result from an aging population but, by and large, the market is mature. The market for tachyrhythmia devices, in contrast, is only beginning. 

Ascorbic acid also forms soluble chelate complexes with iron (142—145). It seems ascorbic acid has no effect on high iron levels found in people with iron overload (146). It is well known, in fact, that ascorbic acid in the presence of iron can exhibit either prooxidant or antioxidant effects, depending on the concentration used (147). The combination of citric acid and ascorbic acid may enhance the iron load in aging populations. Iron overload may be the most important common etiologic factor in the development of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, and possibly other disorders. The synergistic combination of citric acid and ascorbic acid needs further study, particularly because the iron overload produced may be correctable (147). 

An aging population and continued improvements in engine technology and fuel economy may slow U.S. gasoline demand in the early part of the twenty-first century from the 2 percent annual growth rate of the 1990s.

The majority of fractures in the aging populations are caused by low impact violence such as a fall caused by slipping indoors. Many falls happen when getting out of bed, walking indoors or falling to the floor from a chair. The surroundings are often indoors and it happens in their own apartment or house. Both somatic and environmental causes of falls and following fractures must be examined and their possible association with current pharmacotherapy. 

We are living in an aging society. The United Nations estimates that the world will have two billion people over the age of 60 by 2050. With the aging population, there are old age diseases that we have to face and treat with more effective therapies. Hypertension, stroke, Alzheimer s disease, heart disease, type II diabetes, Parkinson s disease, and osteoporosis are some examples (Exhibit 11.8). 

Patients, usually children, suffering from this disorder exhibit both impaired attention to an activity, in which they are involved, and frequent changes from one activity to another without completing the first. Associated problems include excessive restlessness, running and jumping, noisiness and talkativeness. In the UK, the prevalence is up to 2% of the school-age population, while in the USA it is 3-5%.
