Ethanol is classified for medical purposes as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. Its effects—that is, being drunk—resemble the human response to anesthetics. There is an initial excitability and increase in sociable behavior, but this results from depression of inhibition rather than from stimulation. At a blood alcohol concentration of 0.1% to 0.3%, motor coordination is affected, accompanied by loss of balance, slurred speech, and amnesia. When blood alcohol concentration rises to 0.3% to 0.4%, nausea and loss of consciousness occur. Above 0.6%, spontaneous respiration and cardiovascular regulation are affected, ultimately leading to death. The LD50 of ethanol is 10.6 g/kg (Chapter 1 Focus On). 

Antipsychotic medications are indicated in the treatment of acute and chronic psychotic disorders. These include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and manic states occurring as part of a bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder. The co-adminstration of antipsychotic medication with antidepressants has also been shown to increase the remission rate of severe depressive episodes that are accompanied by psychotic symptoms. Antipsychotic medications are frequently used in the management of agitation associated with delirium, dementia, and toxic effects of both prescribed medications (e.g. L-dopa used in Parkinson s disease) and illicit dtugs (e.g. cocaine, amphetamines, andPCP). They are also indicated in the management of tics that result from Gilles de la Tourette s syndrome, and widely used to control the motor and behavioural manifestations of Huntington s disease. 

ANTIFLATULENTS. Activated charcoal can adsorb drugs while they are in the GI tract. The nurse administers charcoal 2 hours before or 1 hour after other medications. If diarrhea persists or lasts longer than 2 days or is accompanied by fever, the nurse notifies the primary care provider. Simethicone is administered after each meal and at bedtime... 

The requirements for a NADA are set out in 21 CFR 514.1 and summarised in Figure 7.7. A F DA-35 6v form must accompany each submission (see Figure 7.8). In severe cases, or those refractory to treatment, truncal and limb weakness may be accompanied by involvement of masticatory, bulbar, and respiratory muscles. A number of medications have been studied to alleviate symptoms of stimulant withdrawal and the intense craving that may accompany it, but inconsistent results across controlled trials preclude any recommendations for their routine use. Patients with stimulant use disorders should be referred to substance abuse treatment because of the high risk for continued use either during or immediately following stimulant withdrawal. 

Assess for the safety of others and potential for violence. If accompanied by friends or family with whom the patient is living, ask them to remove from the home all guns, caustic chemicals, medications, and objects the person might use to harm self or others. Risk factors for suicide include severity of depression, feelings of hopelessness, comorbid personality disorder, and a history of a previous suicide attempt.19... 

In addition to stability effects, pH adjustment can influence comfort, safety, and activity of the product. Comfort can be described as the subjective response of the patient after instillation of the product in the cul-de-sac (i.e., whether it may cause a pain response such as stinging or burning). Eye irritation is normally accompanied by an increase in tear fluid secretion (a defense mechanism) to aid in the restoration of normal physiological conditions. Accordingly in addition to the discomfort encountered, products that produce irritation will tend to be flushed from the eye, and hence a more rapid loss of medication may occur with a probable reduction in the therapeutic response [15].

Depression, we are told over and over again, is a brain disease, a chemical imbalance that can be adjusted by antidepressant medication. In an informational brochure issued to inform the public about depression, the US National Institute for Mental Health tells people that depressive illnesses are disorders of the brain and adds that important neurotransmitters - chemicals that brain cells use to communicate - appear to be out of balance . This view is so widespread that it was even proffered by the editors of PLoS [Public Library of Science] Medicine in their summary that accompanied our article. Depression, they wrote, is a serious medical illness caused by imbalances in the brain chemicals that regulate mood , and they went on to say that antidepressants are supposed to work by correcting these imbalances. 

The placebo effect in asthma is one of the most well-studied and robust placebo effects on physiological function. The wheezing that sufferers of asthma experience is accompanied by a constriction of the bronchial airways that makes it difficult for them to breathe. Asthma medications dilate the bronchial tubes, making it easier to breathe, but a large number of studies have shown that placebos can also affect bronchial dilation. In fact, about two-thirds of the response to real asthma medication is also produced by placebo treatment, leaving about one-third of the effect as a true drug effect.40...
