The forefather of the chemistry of organic compounds of tin and lead was the Swiss chemist Carl Lowig. In the middle of the nineteenth century in the Zurich University laboratory (which was not set up to handle toxic compounds), he developed for the first time several methods for the synthesis of common organic derivatives of these two elements and described their properties41-44.

Nogo, named by Mardn Schwab of Zurich University, is a member of the endoplasmic redculum associated protein family, redculon. Despite being associated with endoplasmic redculum of oligodendrocytes, Nogo-A is also exhibited on the surface and mediates growth cone collapse (Fournier et al., 2002).

In 1911 he went on to become professor of theoretical physics at Zurich University for two years and then returned to the Netherlands in 1912 as appointed professor of theoretical physics at Utrecht University. In 1913 he married Mathilde Alberer, with whom he had a son and a daughter. His son (Peter P. Debye) became a physicist and collaborated with Debye on some of his research. The following year, he moved to the University of Gottingen, heading the theoretical department of the Physical Institute. In 1915 he became editor of Physikalische Zeitschrift (until 1940). He became director of the entire Physical Institute and lectured on experimental physics until 1920.

Biotechnology, including its pilot plant, was installed at ETHZ at the right time. At the Institute of Molecular Biology at Zurich University, Ch. Weissmann had expressed Interferon a with a strain of E. coli. It was the first cytokine to be produced - in collaboration with the Institute of Biotechnology - in a modern 3000 litre bioreaction vessel in Switzerland.

Jakob Tanner is professor at the Research Institute for Social and Economic History, Zurich University. His doctoral dissertation, at the same university, dealt with the economic and financial history of Switzerland in World War II. He subsequently undertook research at the department of history, Basle University, and lectured at Bern, Fribourg, Basle and Zurich. As a fellow of the Maison des Sciences de THomme and research director at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, he specialized in the history of science. During 1996/97 he was guest professor at Bielefeld.

In 1948, vitamin B 2 was isolated from the liver as red crystals. In 1961, it was determined that it forms a chelate structure having a Co—CH2 bond by X-ray diffraction studies. Then vitamin B12 becomes the first compound having a metal-carbon bond to be discovered in natural compounds [75a]. The total synthesis of vitamin B12 was achieved in 1972 by the result of one joint research work w ith one hundred researchers from nineteen countries at Harvard University and Zurich University over a period of eleven years [75b]. 

To survey the needs of graduates of Universities of Applied Sciences, graduates from technical subjects at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW have been questioned. The topics in question were the expectations they had with respect to their future employers and their experiences and perceptions at the entry into professional life and their careers.
