The World Patent Index of Derwent Information Ltd. is a broad collection of international value-added patent documents from 40 patent-issuing authorities. The bibliographic database contains 11.6 million patent records with 5.5 million images (October, 2002) and grows by 1.5 million patent documents each year. The classified and indexed documents (since 1963) are sometimes provided wdth additional abstracts or significant titles. 

There is growing commercial importance and escalating scientific interest in PVDF. The World Patent database, including the United States, Hsts 678 patents that cite the term poly(vinyHdene fluoride) for the period 1963—1980 and 2052 patents for the period 1981—1992 Chemical Abstracts files covering the years 1967—1992 contain 5282 references for the same term. Thirty years ago there was only one commercial producer of PVDF in the world now there are two in the United States, two in Japan, and three in Europe.

World Patents Index. WPI, produced by Derwent Publications, Ltd., contains records of patent publications from 32 issuing authorities around the world. Since 1970, all chemical technologies are included. Prior to then, content varies as follows polymers from 1966, agricultural chemicals from 1965, and pharmaceuticals from 1963. Records contain bibliographic data and an abstract, which describes the novel features of the patent. The patent tides and abstracts in WPI are created by Derwent and generally give a more definitive description of the patent s content than the title and abstract, which appear on the document itself Records also list equivalent or family member patents that have been identified as covering the same or related invention(s) (92). 

Because the electrochemistry of pyridines has not been reviewed before with regard to industrially significant processes, this review will therefore cover the period 1801-1983. Citations from 1801-1975 have been compiled in Swann s bibliography.1 These citation listings were broken down into six indices author, patent, product molecular formula, synonym, product name, and product type. A computer-aided search of Chemical Abstracts and the World Patent Index covered the period 1967-1983. Other sources such as the reviews on heterocyclic electrochemistry by Lund2 and Nelson3 contained useful citations. Nelson s review has a valuable table that summarizes the synthetic work by indexing the parent heterocycle. 

Patents make up one of the principal storehouses of information concerning the technical advances in the industrial world. Technical men have become increasingly aware of the importance of the patent literature. Evidence of this is seen in the fact that Chemical Abstracts makes a concerted effort to abstract all United States and foreign patents of possible interest to the chemist, and in the numerous patent-abstracting services that have sprung up in various parts of the world. 

The literature to be reviewed was taken from searches on a number of online databases, including Chemical Abstracts, Derwent World Patent Index, European Patents Online, and the full text U.S. Patent database." The author has endeavored to encompass all the literature at least to the end of 1998.
